Legislative panel hears testimony on issues facing KY hospitals

By Jordan Hensley, LRC

Louisville, KY - Lawmakers heard testimony today on how staffing shortages are impacting Kentucky's hospitals and how they can help.

The Interim Joint Committee on Health, Welfare and Family Services met at the Kentucky State Fair where Nancy Galvagni, president of the Kentucky Hospital Association, highlighted a growing issue with transporting patients.

Citing experts in the field, Galvagni said that fewer ambulances are available to transport patients from one hospital to another due to staffing shortages and the high demand for ambulance services.

"Across the state, hospitals are discovering that many times when we call, the ambulance simply doesn't come," said Galvagni. "Patients who have suffered from strokes, severe burns or even suicide attempts are languishing for hours and sometimes days at a hospital emergency room waiting for transport to the appropriate level of care."

Gov.: Breaking the record for hospitalizations every day

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday during his weekly Team Kentucky update, Gov. Andy Beshear said hospitalizations have increased every day without exception for the past 42 days, from 239 people July 14 to a record 2,074 people Aug. 25. Before the delta variant, Kentucky's record number of COVID-19 hospitalizations was 1,817 on Dec. 17, 2020.

The Governor highlighted other statistics from July 14: On that day, there were 60 Kentuckians in the ICU for COVID-19; as of yesterday, there were 549. On July 14, there were 25 Kentuckians with COVID-19 on a ventilator; as of yesterday, there were 338. On July 14, the state's COVID-19 test positivity rate was 3.81%, and it was down to a low of 1.79% June 24; yesterday, it was 13.16%, a record high in the time since the state has had adequate testing supplies.

"My point with all of these numbers is that we are in uncharted territory. We have been fighting this virus for almost 18 months, but we have never been here before," said Gov. Beshear. "As horrible as last year's surge was, we were never in the position where doctors worried they'd need to choose between treating a patient who can't breathe because of COVID or treating a patient who is bleeding out from a car accident. But that is the strain that our hospitals are under now."

Kentucky health care heroes said vaccinations are the "No. 1 priority right now."

Letter: Computers for ACSO

Mikki Flowers writes:
I think it's wonderful that the Sheriff's Office has received this computer system in their vehicles. When I worked in the Sheriff's Office, I was shocked to learn all of their duties with so few officers. This will be a great tool to save time for these dedicated officers. Thank you to all officers for your service.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 8-25-2021

By Sam Price
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Where Did Cases Visit Prior to Isolation: The most common places cases visited prior to isolation are (in descending order): Schools, Businesses, Family, and Travel Related. Of our active cases, 21% can not be tied back to another known case (community-spread cases).

New Cases: We report that our total case count has increased by 260 since our last report. Our new cases (including suspect cases) are as follows: Adair: 21; Casey: 29; Clinton: 17; Cumberland: 2; Green: 12; McCreary: 6; Pulaski: 52; Russell: 38; Taylor: 61; and, Wayne: 22. Our current new case growth rate is: 1.00789. This means our total case count is projected to double every 88.21 days. The most new cases we ever added in a single day was on 08/23/2021 when we added 416 cases.

Today, you may notice a difference in our numbers. One case was moved from Casey to Russell County when an address was corrected.

We are also very sad to report two additional deaths. One was an Adair County resident and the other was a Cumberland County resident (both unvaccinated) who both were in the 70-79 year age group. We extend our deepest sympathies to these families during their terrible losses.

Additionally, out of today's 260 reported cases, 80 of them were in individuals age 18 or younger.

Again, we encourage our citizens to take the COVID-19 vaccine, which is safe and very effective. Of our 13,248 new cases since the vaccine started becoming available, almost 95.30% were unvaccinated.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 13.16%.
