Governor's Wednesday update: 655 new cases By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in the commonwealth. "The COVID-19 death toll is more than in several wars that we have fought," the Governor said. "I hope that we are committed to doing what it takes and making smart decisions to keep this virus on the decline. Not just so we can reopen businesses and schools, but so we can have fewer people die." Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health, urged people to remain vigilant in protecting themselves and others. "I know people are tired and want to get back to their normal lives. We are not here to separate people from their schools, jobs and social activities, but we cannot rationalize our way out of this. There's a bad disease out there. We have no vaccine, cure or treatment. When it hits people it hits them hard, it causes hospitals to overcrowd and it takes lives," Dr. Stack said. "We want to inspire you to do the right thing. Please listen to the public health professionals, here and around the nation. Every single one of us is saying the same thing: Wear masks, wash your hands, social distance." High school students share data about NTI with KY lawmakers By Jordan Hensley, LRC Frankfort, KY - Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) during the pandemic did not look the same for every student in Kentucky, according to research presented by two upcoming Kentucky high school seniors. This data, along with other testimony, led lawmakers on the Interim Joint Committee on Education to discuss whether individual school districts should decide when to return to school and when to close school due to COVID-19. The high school students, Krupa Hegde and Gabriella Staykova, shared data compiled from a student-to-student survey on how students across the Commonwealth have been handling the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey was led by the Student Voice Team of The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence. The "Coping with COVID" survey includes 9,500 responses from students across 119 counties. The survey examined each student's education environment, home environment, physical and mental wellness and future plans. "One of the main themes we found in our home environment was a change in employment ...," Hegde said. "We truly felt that employment is changing for both students and their caretakers during this pandemic with 13.3 percent having to take on more hours at work and nearly 1 out of every 3 students had parents who had lost hours at their work. Sixty percent of students reported feeling more worried about money and 5.6 percent of students were reportedly more worried about food." Carney moves closer to family John Chowning sends this recent update from Mark Carney: Bam had a big milestone on his road to recovery yesterday. He got moved a little closer to home! He was transferred from Norton's to Danville. He is now at Select Speciality Hospital, which is a 24 bed facility on the 4th floor of Ephriam McDowell Regional Medical Center. Select Speciality is a long term care facility that will hopefully and prayerfully give Bam the continued care he needs to regain his nourishment and strength. Select had not been allowing any visitors since Covid hit in March, but just this last week they adopted a visiting policy that allows one visitor to visit during the hours of 11am-4pm with the total length of your stay being 4 hours or less. While this is not as much as the 8 hours that we were getting at a previous facility we were at, we are so thankful to be able to be with him daily again as we were not able to see him the last two weeks and two days that he was at Norton's. Blood Donations exceed goal T.J. Health Columbia hosted a blood drive on Friday, August 14, in partnership with the American Red Cross. With the help of donors in the community, the blood drive was highly successful, exceeding the goal of 25 units by collecting 28 units of blood. According to the American Red Cross, each unit of blood saves up to three lives. The need for blood never stops. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, but there is currently a critical shortage in blood supply. "We appreciate the tremendous outpouring of support from the community," said Neil Thornbury, CEO of T.J. Regional Health. "We rely on the American Red Cross for the blood supply in our hospitals, and the American Red Cross relies on the public to donate. We will definitely be hosting additional blood drives in the future." Donors can give blood every 56 days. The next blood drive at T.J. Health Columbia will be announced in the coming weeks. 2020-08-19 09:56:11 | Comments | Printable version
