Pumpkin Festival cancelled due to pandemic

By Gaye Shaw, Executive Director
Edmonton Metcalfe Chamber of Commerce

Due to the current pandemic, the Edmonton Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has cancelled the 2020 Metcalfe County Pumpkin Festival. All vendors will have their booth fees returned.

This was an exceedingly difficult decision.

What most people do not realize is that work begins on the next year’s Pumpkin Festival the Monday following the event and continues throughout the months preceding the next October.

In early summer, over two hundred letters of invitation are mailed to previous vendors. This takes a good deal of time not to mention money for postage, flyers and envelopes. A few weeks before the event, porta potties are rented, and trash pickup is arranged. This event just does not happen. It takes a lot of work! Many hours of work have been invested in what was to be the 39th Annual Metcalfe County Pumpkin Festival.

Besides membership dues, the Pumpkin Festival is the main fund raiser for the local Chamber of Commerce. So of course, the Chamber wanted and needed to have the event. The chamber, like many other organizations and businesses, is suffering financially due to the pandemic.

BUT, considering that the numbers of people getting the Covid virus continues to increase, the health and welfare of this community far outweighed any benefit that might be gained by hosting such an event.

No one is sadder than we, at the Edmonton Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce, that this year’s event is cancelled.
