Two days late! How July 4th became Independence Day Few people realize that the resolution for American Independence was actually approved on July 2, 1776. Here's how it happened. By June of that year, the colonies were seething with revolt. The English Parliament had forced them to endure "an absolute tyranny," as Thomas Jefferson later wrote in the Declaration of Independence. Grievances included: Taxation without representation; Parliament's dissolving the Virginia House of Burgesses; a monopoly on exports and imports resulting in exorbitant prices; and British troops being quartered in the colonists' homes. Safety tips for Fourth of July celebrations By Sherelle Roberts-Pierre Frankfort, KY - With cities and towns across Kentucky making difficult choices to postpone or cancel Independence Day events due to COVID-19, the Kentucky Division of Fire Prevention expects more Kentuckians to create their own backyard celebrations. With that in mind, state fire officials are asking Kentuckians to use caution and common sense during this year's celebrations to avoid injury from fireworks. "The safest bet is to watch fireworks shows at home or online as many cities are live streaming the celebrations," said Mike Haney, director of the Division of Fire Prevention in the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. "But if you do celebrate with fireworks, first check local ordinances for what's legal; and be sure to read and follow the directions on firework labels." Haney encourages families who decide to attend a public celebration to wear a mask, socially distance and wash your hands often to avoid the spread of COVID-19. Additional firework safety measures include the following: Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2020-07-04 10:57:21 | Comments | Printable version

Letter: Masks Mary Knight writes: As far as Dick and I are concerned, masks are a fact of life. We wear them as much for others, as for ourselves. We have never had symptoms, but with this virus, that means nothing. And the thought, that by not wearing a mask, we could cause someone else to become infected, is a horrible thought. A mask prevents that worry.Comments re: All they ask is you wear a mask. Why not? 2020-07-04 07:53:07 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Letter: Kindness always works Commentary on people's behaviors and attitudes towards COVID 19, protesting, monuments, religious views, politics, sports, weather By Rodney Smith Kindness. An attribute many of us have forgotten or sadly seem to have never possessed. I have read many posts, viewed several video clips, and listened to countless amounts of audio clips about: COVID 19, masks, protestors, rioters, statues, historical events, politics, and religious views. I am truly amazed how many people have decided against showing kindness to others. It looks as if we have allowed fear, corruption, and confusion to muffle the voice of kindness. Opinions. Opinions. Opinions. All of us have our thoughts and opinions about all of these issues we are currently facing together, wether or not we state them written or vocally. When we do decide to share them, we need to do this in a way which echoes kindness. Every time we speak, type, or write, sharing our viewpoints, we should use kindness. A book that has many wise sayings states; "A soft answer turneth away wrath; but grievous words stir up anger." (Proverbs 15:1) A soft answer doesn't mean you are weak, it only means you really care about others. The next time you or I decide to share our thoughts and opinions, which is perfectly fine if you wish, please consider kindness. It always works. 2020-07-04 07:31:18 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
Letter: Why does it matter? Mason writes: If you're wearing a mask, doesn't that keep you safe? Why does it matter if someone else doesn't?Mason, thanks for writing. One of the biggest reasons is asympomatic spread. Tons of folks have the virus without ever knowing, or showing any sympoms. If they wear a mask, it helps reduce the spread. Increased mask usage is one of the biggest reasons for the differences in virus spread in different geographic areas, and the less it's actively spreading, the faster we can reopen things. Governor's update on COVID-19 By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Friday updated Kentuckians on the state's continued efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). "This 4th of July weekend, it's important to keep in mind how committed Kentuckians have been to combatting COVID-19, which spreads easily and quickly between people. Kentuckians' selflessness was demonstrated over Passover/Easter weekend and again over Memorial Day weekend," said Gov. Beshear. "This weekend, we have another opportunity to show care and consideration for our fellow Kentuckians, especially those at higher risk for severe illness and even death. Let's be the best Kentuckians that we are capable of being. Let's all commit to doing our part to ensure a safe and healthy Independence Day weekend for all." The Governor said Kentucky and America are at war with the coronavirus. "This week, the United States posted a single-day high of over 50,000 new positive cases," the Governor said. "States across the country are seeing dangerous surges, including Arizona - a state one and a half times larger than us - which saw 88 people die on Tuesday alone. And today, we learned 300 children in Texas day cares have contracted the virus. Everyone must take this virus seriously and follow safety precautions in order for us to continue reopening." The Governor also added that his next press briefing will be held on Thursday, July 9, at 4pmET, not Tuesday, July 7, as was previously planned. Case Information As of 4 p.m. July 3, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 16,376 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 299 of which were newly reported Friday. All they ask is you wear a mask. Why not? By Linda Waggener A friend shared an experience observed at the entry of a doctors building. In front of her a man was stopped for temperature registeration. With that good, the attendant then asked him to put on a mask. He refused, saying he did not wear masks. She said, "Then I'm afraid you won't be able to enter. He said, "I have an appointment."
