One of the biggest reasons is asympomatic spread. Tons of folks have the virus without ever knowing, or showing any sympoms. If they wear a mask, it helps reduce the spread. Increased mask usage is one of the biggest reasons for the differences in virus spread in different geographic areas, and the less it's actively spreading, the faster we can reopen things.
