Bill promoting SIDS research clears Senate

By Robert Weber, LRC

Frankfort, KY - Eighty-five words.

Sen. Max Wise said that is the number of new words that legislation he filed would add to an existing statute to promote research and prevention of sudden infant death syndrome, known as SIDS, and other unknown causes of death.

The measure, known as Senate Bill 237, would allow a parent or guardian to request a tissue sample be collected during an autopsy of a child who has succumbed to SIDS.

Wise said he was made aware of sudden infant death syndrome in May 2013. That's when his friends, Dwayne and Chrissy Ellison, lost their third child, Finley, to SIDS at three months of age. The Scott County couple have gone on to spread awareness about SIDS and safe sleep across the nation.

Bank of Columbia offers longer drive-thru and more

By Andrea Waggener

The Bank of Columbia takes the health of our community very seriously. To reduce the risk of exposure and limit the spread of COVID-19 to our Adair County families we are making adjustments to our hours of operations.

Effective Saturday, March 21, 2020 Bank of Columbia will be offering customers banking by appointment for loans, access to safe deposit boxes, CD renewal and opening accounts.

The lobbies at the Main and Branch locations are not closed, just restricted. Customers can call 270-384-6433 or 2579 to make an appointment with a loan officer. Businesses may call ahead for larger deposits to allow the drive thru lanes to move more quickly. Customers who need to purchase cashier's checks may call ahead or call us from the parking lot and we will allow access to the lobby when we have them ready.

Bank of Columbia like to remind customers that deposits and loan payments can also be made at our ATM and in our Night Deposit box, which will be checked frequently throughout the day.

Our drive-thru hours Saturday will be extended.

The Joe and Fay Roy Wilson Farm up for auction

Craigmiles, a Russell County ex-pat living in Indiana, makes weekly trips to Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery on Damron Creek Road. On a recent trip, signs of a pending auction triggered lots of memories.

By Melissa Rexroat Craigmiles

Yesterday me and my hubby James went down home to Russell Springs, as I do almost every Saturday. Amid this crisis with corona virus, I could not skip a weekend going down home to put flowers on my mom and dad's grave at Mt Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery in the Webb's Crossroads community.

My parents had a nice farm for 54 years on Damrons Creek and a large 2 story home. Mom and I auctioned the house in 2003. Our land we sold to Joe and Fay Wilson, our neighbors next door to my parents farm. My mother I were very fond of the Wilsons. We visited them every weekend at their farm next door. I have fond memories there.

So on Sunday when James and I drove down from Jeffersonville, Indiana, where we live, I was standing at my parents' grave, Oris And Gladys Rexroat, and turned and saw an auction sign at the Wilson residence farm. Joe died in 2013, his wife Fay, a 3rd cousin to my mother, died last year.

COVID-19 Health Tips from CHFS

For the latest information on the novel coronavirus in Kentucky, visit kycovid19.ky.gov.

When to Seek Care:
To ensure the sickest people receive care, help minimize the spread of infection and maintain resources, please follow the guidelines below when considering whether to seek medical care:
  • Stay Home: If you are worried but well. Doctors offices will have a higher number of people with illness, and you increase your risk of catching something while at the same time further overwhelming health care workers who are already working hard.

  • Call for Advice: If you are ill, but wouldn't normally have gone to the doctor, do not seek care at an ER, hospital, or doctor's office. You can get advice by calling your local healthcare provider or calling the Kentucky state hotline at 1-800-722-5725.

  • Seek Care: If you are sick and feel you have an emergency, please call your doctor or seek medical care.
If you have developed a fever or respiratory symptoms and believe you have had exposure to a known case or traveled to an area with community spread, isolate yourself from others in your home and contact your healthcare provider or local health department to describe your symptoms and any recent travel before you go to the healthcare facility.

Letter: Grocery hours for seniors

Diane R. Wallace writes:
Allowing seniors access to stores would be a tremendous help. It is my earnest request, this be a serious consideration.

I am in the 60+ category and considered healthy, however, my elderly mother's needs (87 years) precede my own. This has been difficult and challenging because the stores are so crowded even in my normal and usual early morning time shopping. I am my mother's sole caregiver, translation: I cannot afford to either be a carrier or get sick for her sake. --Diane
