Letter: Brown is new favorite color

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I'm resisting the temptation to use the adjective "great" to describe this pic. Great is just simply too limited in descriptive juices, so to speak.

After drinking in the complexity of the pic's simplicity, the clarity of soft contrast and the richness of muted tone, brown is now my favorite color! --BJF
Billy Joe, thanks much for the kind words! --Pen

Letter: Original Yellowhammer School location

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
Interesting information from Mike Watson on the Yellowhammer name. Some may not know that the current Yellowhammer School location is not the original location of the school.

The original location was about half mile on down Yellowhammer Road toward Glensfork and then left on the Hellums Road. My Dad pointed out the location to me when I was a youngster. At that time there was still a bit of evidence of the building. --Dave

Deputy Durbin activated his lights and sirens and attempted to initiate at traffic stop, but the vehicle, later found to be a 2014 Kia, continued on in an attempt to elude the deputy.

The vehicle tried to exit the parkway at mile marker 49 at a high rate of speed. The operator was unable to make turn from the parkway at that speed and lost control of the vehicle. History Monday: Yellowhammer

(Sort of) in response to Linda's beautiful photo on Sunday...

By Mike Watson

"Yellow Hammer" or "Yellowhammer" School has, perhaps, a one-of-a-kind name. The question has been asked, more than once, how this school received its name. That is another question for the ages, it seems. The rural school, known as Yellowhammer, dates to the latter quarter of the 1800s.

It was not known by that name prior to the Civil War, as there is a good list of the districts of the 1850s. At some point in the 1880s or so, this name was given to a new or revised school district located between Fairplay and Glensfork.

There are two or three possible origins:
