Chamber building to get updated sign and paint this year

Among announcements at the February meeting of the Columbia Adair Chamber of Commerce, Executive Director Ellen Zornes said the front of the building will be getting a facelift this spring. The much needed sign change and painting will be done in the weeks ahead by local painter Doug Janes.

Speakers Wynona Padgett, the Lake Cumberland Regional Cancer Control Specialist for the ten-county area, along with Scott Surber and Allison Cross, both representing the Center for Rural Development, shared information at the meeting.

Padgett brought free radon test kits and information about the dangers of radon gas which is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the state after smoking.

Afterward, Chamber members were encouraged to share Cross' message about the Center for Rural Development's Rogers Scholars program which has had an Adair County student every year since it's inception, giving students opportunities they'll need to succeed in life.

The Center provides grants, training and opportunities to help all ages.

The 2020 Census was also a topic covered at the meeting. Jerry Garmon, a recruiter from Edmonton, Metcalfe County, KY, appealed to the audience to help spread the word and make sure every citizen is counted in the upcoming census. He appealed to members to share opportunities to become a Census Taker at $14 per hour in our rural area plus 58 cents per road mile. Flexible hours are a benefit and applicants need to be 18 or older, have a drivers license, a vehicle and an email address plus photo ID.

He stressed that Adair does not yet have the jobs filled.

He also said each person not included in the count looses $2,000 to the community in possible aid that is calculated by the number of people in our county. That is a loss of $20,000 over the ten years from one census to the next.

The Chamber meets monthly at the Cranmer Dining Center on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College.
