Bevin joins push for reduced opioid production quotas

By Nicole Burton

Frankfort, KY - - Gov. Matt Bevin announced today that Kentucky joined six states in a letter to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) supporting the agency's strong efforts to reduce opioid production quotas and asking that that the agency consider additional factors, such as over-prescribing, when finalizing the 2020 production quotas for Schedule I and II Controlled Substances, which includes opioids such as Oxycodone.

The letter, signed by Gov. Bevin and Attorneys General from West Virginia, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, and Nebraska, ensures that Kentucky's voice is heard as DEA analyzes the proposed quantities of drugs that should be produced next year "to meet the legitimate medical and scientific needs of the United States."

RMH is a truly special place

You can drop off your donation today, Tuesday, October 29, 2019, between 3pmCT and 5:30pmCT at the Chamber of Commerce, 201 Burkesville St., Columbia, KY. Click for information and a list of needed items.

By Kasey Bardin

Our son, Blane, was diagnosed with AML in the fall of 2007 and we spent the next several months in Louisville while he received aggressive chemo treatments. We were lucky to be able to stay with our baby at Kosair, but the Ronald McDonald House was an invaluable resource for family coming to visit. It is truly a safe haven in a time of crisis and uncertainty for so many families.

I realized just how special of a place it is while visiting my sister (Tara Coomer) and Brittany Smith as their babies grew in the NICU. We spent many nights gathered around a kitchen table in the dining room of the Lexington Ronald McDonald House, enjoying moments of great food and fellowship... moments of normalcy in a time of chaos. It becomes home... and donations from people in the community continue to make it feel like just that.

Something as simple as a roll of paper towels, snacks, breakfast bars, or deodorant can really make all the difference. Take a look at the wish list and drop off your items at the Chamber this afternoon. I promise that it is needed and appreciated.

My son, Brent, was born in 2009 with some breathing complications. He was flown out to Kosair within a few hours after his birth. I remained in the hospital till the next day when I was discharged. Then, I made the trip to Kosair and that's when we were able to get a room at the Louisville Ronald McDonald House, "The House that Love Built,"" so we were able to rest between visits to see our son.

He stayed in NICU for 9 days (thankful our journey was shorter than many, but it was a life changing experience for me). Our stay at the Ronald McDonald House was very helpful and appreciated the nice volunteers that assisted with getting us in. If it wasn't for the Ronald McDonald House, we would have had to travel back and forth or stay at the hospital around the clock.

Since my son's NICU journey and our experience of staying in the RMH I have chosen to make this annual charity drive for the RMH a personal endeavor to make it successful each year! I encourage anyone who has found themself in need of a place to stay while a newborn was in the NICU or during a child illness or injury to send in their story to you, come by the Chamber of Commerce, this Tuesday, October 29th from 3-5:30 pm central time and share your story with the volunteers, who have also stayed at RMH at some time.
