History: Part II of The fight for local option 1934-1937

JIM

The fight for local option in Adair County, 1934-1937
Part II of II: a court ruling, an election that wasn't, a troublesome amendment cast out, and another election. (To review Part I = Click here)

The fight for local option in Adair County, 1934-1937 (part 2 of 2)

On October 11, just nine days after the prohibitionists' crushing special election victory, eleven Adair County businessmen, including the previously named Mssrs. Tabor, Morris, and Epperson, presented to County Clerk W.E. Harris a petition seeking to nullify the election, claiming that County Judge W.G. Shepherd had erred in certifying the order for the special election. Clerk Harris in turn served notice on Judge Shepherd, and that same week and for the two weeks following, a copy of the entire petition the appeared in the News. In the October 24 edition, Reed Logan, one of the eleven signees, formally withdrew his name, stating in a paid advertisement that signing the petition "was a mistake and a misunderstanding on my part."

Thanks to all for a great annual book fair

By Mike Watson

The Thirteenth Annual Adair County Book Fair is in the books, as you might say. The Adair County Book Fair, which ran in conjunction with Downtown Days this past Saturday, was a qualifying success according to attendees and authors alike.

We had expected forty-four vendors from across the state. Due to family illness and mishap, we lost three of those vendors, but the rest came, visited, sold books, and talked the day away!

A big thank you to all those who braved the sunny, mid-sixties temps and strolled across Lindsey Wilson's campus and mingled with some of the most interesting people gathered that day--and I was there, too!

Looking forward to another big day one year from now!

Frankfort, KY - A generous donation of 15,000 blue catfish from the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources boosted fish populations in the Kentucky River.

"We're grateful to West Virginia for helping us fortify blue catfish populations in areas where numbers are low and catfishing is popular," said Paul Wilkes, acting director of fisheries for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

Earlier this year, Arkansas donated 38,000 surplus cutthroat trout to Kentucky, enabling the state to stock this species for the first time ever in the Cumberland River below Lake Cumberland.
