Homemakers look back in celebrating 70th anniversary

This is the 70th anniversary of the Adair County extension homemakers. The annual meeting will be Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 6pmCT at the extension office, 409 Fairgrounds Street, Columbia, KY. There will be a display of memorabilia of projects, lessons, crafts from years past of the extension homemakers.

An article from May 6, 1982 issue of the Daily Statesman read: First County organization began in 1949 at Bliss.

In 1949, a local group of interested citizens appeared before the Adair County Fiscal Court and presented to the court reasons why their county should be receiving the services of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension service.

As a result Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Cochran were sent to our county, he as County Agent and she as our very first Home Demonstration Agent.

After their arrival in Adair County Mr. and Mrs. Cochran immediately began to work with farmers. And Mrs. Cochran organized the first homemakers program which in this day is available to interested women all over the county.

That first homemakers club was the Bliss club and it is still active today. On October 1, 1966, Mrs. Sue C. Stivers came to Adair County as the County Extension Agent for Home Economics. Of the present 26 clubs, 23 of these clubs have been organized under the leadership of Sue Stivers. Bliss, Cane Valley and the Night Timers clubs were already active.

Two years ago a new type of membership was made available to Adair Countians. The “mailbox homemaker club member“ was introduced which encouraged anyone who for any reason was not a member of an organized club to join. The article continued to explain lessons available and invite everyone to participate.

The county officers of the organization were: Mrs. Lola Corneal, county president; Mrs. Linda Moss, vice president; Mrs. Linda Kessler, secretary; and treasurer, Mrs. Lila Loy.

Subject matter chairs included: Marilyn Brown, clothing and textiles; Mary Allender, cultural arts; Paula Miller, family life; Lucille lemon, foods and nutrition; Judy Giles, 4H; Bea Green, health; Rita Rowe, housing, energy and environment; Mildred Milson, management; Nelda Pendleton, public information; Evelyn Komosa, international; Carol Knifley, area treasurer; and Mattie Hutchison, area management chairman.
