Sept. 15-21 will be Farm Safety and Health Week

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles has proclaimed the week of Sept. 15-21 as Farm Safety and Health Week in Kentucky to encourage farmers and farm workers to put safety first at all times.

"Farmers face all sorts of risks in the course of their work - machinery accidents, chemical exposure, unruly livestock, grain bin entrapment, severe weather, and many others," Commissioner Quarles said. "In Kentucky, we have made great strides toward making farming safer. But one farm fatality is one too many. And when a farmer is killed or seriously injured on the job, it's not just the farmer who is affected - family members, employees, and business partners all suffer.

Whether you are on the farm, on the road, or in the home, please take that extra step to protect yourself and those around you."

Letter: A story that should be told

Martha Berry writes:
Vonnie, I don't remember the year but I do remember Mom telling me about the fire. Later one of the Jackman teachers was hired to teach at CHS and did so without a ripple of protest. Because of that lady Columbia schools were integrated long before the rest of the country. I don't think I ever new her name but you can probably find it in the records. Her story should be told in any history of the schools. --Martha

Beware so-called free genetic testing

Kathy Shelton passes on the following advice to protect yourself from a new type of Medicare scam:

Scammers are offering "free" genetic tests and claiming Medicare will cover it, so that they can get your Medicare Number and use it to commit fraud and identity theft. They're targeting people through telemarketing calls, health fairs, and even knocking on doors.

Only a doctor you know and trust should order and approve any requests for genetic testing. If Medicare is billed for a test or screening that wasn't medically necessary and/or wasn't ordered by your doctor, the claim could be denied. That means you could be responsible for the entire cost of the test, which could be thousands of dollars.

Here are some ways to protect yourself:

Letter: The importance of Rosenwald Schools

Comments re photo 85029 Student heading in to the Rosenwald School

By Vonnie Kolbenschlag

This photo is from Brenda Smith. She gave it to me to put in the files at the library when I was doing write-ups about Jackman School, which also was a Rosenwald School and it is pictured in the background. Jackman School was larger than the school at Flatwoods, which is the only one remaining of five Rosenwald Schools in Adair County.

I am very glad the Flatwoods School is getting attention. It is a very important building representing the effort made to establish schools for African-American children who were denied a chance for education in the "white" schools. Many communities are realizing the significance of Rosenwald Schools that are on the endangered list.

Mike Watson: Restoration in Action--Volunteers Needed

By Mike Watson

One of the historic buildings of Adair County is in need of some tender loving care. A bit of cosmetic work will be applied to the old Flat Woods School building on September 21, 2019.

The effort began with Sammy Hughes and Rodney White and their desire to see this former Rosenwald School building preserved for future generations. Mr. Hughes, who is a teacher in the Adair County School system, was a student at Flat Woods and, therefore, has a special interest. Mr. White has studied the Rosenwald buildings and sees a need to preserve one of the best examples in Kentucky and one of the best in the nation, and the only one left in Adair County.
