Host Family Appreciation at LWC, Intl Student Programs

By Bryson Jones

On Monday, April 29, 2019, the International Student Programs (ISP) at LWC had their annual Host Family Appreciation gathering. The audience included 170 people from a 6-county area.

The evening started off with Doris Day's version of "Que Sera Sera" (it was the actual recording, after all, we did not want to scare folks!). The Director of the Program, Sabine Eastham, pointed out that although our future is not ours to see, that because of their action, of their involvement and investment in our wonderful students, the future of our ISPWORLDSTARS is so much brighter!

By taking action and getting involved, our wonderful host families helped create memories and provided opportunities that our students would not have had otherwise. For this, Eastham said, "we will be forever grateful."

National Day of Prayer, Thu 2 May 2019

The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed the amended law designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer.

The Adair County Ministerial Association is sponsoring a local meeting for the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 2, 2019, on the steps of the Adair County Courthouse. The theme for this year's Day of Prayer is "Love One Another." The theme comes from the words of Jesus in John 13:34, "Love one another. Just as I have loved you."

Kentucky defending against Chronic Wasting Disease

From Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has finalized details for three additional public forums about an increasingly widespread and fatal brain disease that infects members of the deer family. Since its discovery in Colorado in the 1960s, chronic wasting disease has spread to more than half the states in the country, including six of the seven that border Kentucky.

The latest testing of Kentucky deer and elk returned no positive results. Since 2002, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife has tested nearly 30,000 deer and elk. Most of those animals were harvested by hunters. Every county has had multiple deer tested over time.

Chronic wasting disease is caused by abnormal proteins called prions and affects white-tailed deer, elk, moose, mule deer and caribou (cervids). There is no known cure or vaccine, and the disease is always fatal in infected cervids.
