Presidential Disaster Declaration authorized for flood relief

Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Metcalfe, and Russell Counties are included in the declaration.

By Nicole Burton/Monica French

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin has received notification that President Donald Trump has authorized assistance for certain Kentucky counties that suffered significant damage as a result of the severe flooding event commencing on February 6, 2019, and continuing through March 10, 2019.

"We are grateful to President Trump for issuing an official disaster declaration to assist Kentucky counties impacted by widespread severe weather and flooding earlier this year," said Gov. Bevin. "This federal assistance will provide nearly one half of our counties with important resources as they continue recovery efforts."

The President's action grants public assistance to impacted counties to repair roads, bridges and other infrastructure. The declaration will also provide the Commonwealth with mitigation funding. This system produced extended episodes of strong winds, torrential rain which caused flooding, flash flooding, landslides and mudslides. The majority of damages were to highways, bridges and local and electrical infrastructure.

KY Afield Outdoors: Cumberland Striped Bass Heating Up

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - The higher angle of the sun during the day brings warm breezes as we come into the meat of April. The glorious sunny days of late and air temperatures in the 70s make people joyous.

This weather makes the striped bass in Lake Cumberland hungry.

"We caught five keepers over 22 inches and about eight short stripers last Saturday," said Jeff Bardroff, owner of JBs Guide Service on Lake Cumberland. "The fish had me so busy I couldn't eat breakfast. By the time I got done with one fish, another rod would go down."

Bardroff said they also caught some smallmouth and spotted bass, known as Kentucky bass along with the striped bass. His largest fish of the day was a 29-incher.

School districts in Bullitt, Jefferson, Franklin, Letcher and Green counties will use the funds to replace older-model, diesel school buses with new diesel buses that will emit 98 percent less particulate matter and 90 percent less nitrogen oxide than the older buses they are replacing.

"These new, cleaner buses will make a difference," said Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Charles Snavely. "Students in these districts will breathe easier, and their communities will benefit from cleaner air."

Thieves are stripping KY barns for farmhouse-chic decor

By Tessa Duvall, Louisville Courier Journal

Burkesville, KY - Just off a bend in the Cumberland River stands a weathered tobacco barn whose split and slivered planks have gone missing piece by piece.

Lois "Nan" Coffey, 95, points in exasperation with her tobacco pole cane at the gaping holes and absent barn doors that have left the structure stripped bare in places, like a skeleton with bones missing.

Barnwood thieves have been stealing Kentucky memories across the commonwealth -- from Todd to Russell counties -- not for what's in them but to feed a growing desire for the farmhouse chic popularized by famous HGTV hosts Chip and Joanna Gaines -- that is, taking ancient, weathered barnwood and using it to make a new house look old.

In Kentucky, with more old barns per square mile than any other state, barnwood thieving has been a problem for years. Call a sheriff to ask about a barn theft case, and he's just as likely to ask which one.

Carol Perkins: A time of traditions and spiritual renewal

Previous Column: All any grandparent wants

By Carol Perkins

How did that Easter bunny get those baskets in the front door? For many years, I pondered that question as I anticipated the night before Easter Sunday about the arrival of my basket.

Just as magical as Santa leaving gifts under the tree, the bunny had powers. My basket was loaded with candy sitting on a bed of grass. No one bought a pre-made basket back then. My brother and I protected our favorites and swapped what we were willing to give up. By the time my second brother came along, I no longer looked for the bunny.

Easter activities began on Thursday night at my house with the dying of the hard-boiled eggs.
