LWC Softball rolls on the road in wins over Cumberland

By Christopher Coombs

Lebanon, TN - The No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team completed the regular season series sweep of Cumberland (TN) this afternoon at Billy Dee Ross Park. The Blue Raiders (38-2, 17-1 MSC) captured game one 9-2 and would then take game two 7-0 to close out the series.

Lindsey Wilson defeated the Phoenix (20-19, 6-12 MSC) earlier this season at Marilyn D. Sparks Park on April 10th by scores of 10-2 an 5-0.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Friday when they hit the road to take on Kentucky Christian at 2pmCT for a doubleheader.

Game 1: Lindsey Wilson 9, Cumberland 2

Five Blue Raiders would record two hits in each in the game as Lindsey Wilson produced 13 for the game, outhitting the Phoenix by eight. Makea Al Kaluau tallied four RBI as Cassie Matlock had two of her own.

The Blue Raiders would waste no time scoring runs in the game as they pushed three runs home in the first inning. Callum Pilgrim managed a leadoff walk and would steal second before Zakiya Sizemore singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. Matlock scored Pilgrim on an RBI single for the game's first run.

Kalli Harris then drove in Sizemore on a single down the left field line before Kaluau grounded out to the second baseman, scoring Matlock to increase the LWC advantage to 3-0.

Lindsey Wilson would tack on four more runs in the third inning. Three runs came off the bat of Kaluau when she poked a three-run home run over the left field fence. Boursaw reached on a single and Harris walked earlier in the inning.

With two outs, Luckett would walk before Desiree Chang singled to put runners on first and second. A Pilgrim single up the middle would score Luckett and LWC's fourth run of the inning.

Cumberland managed to get one run back in the bottom half of the inning, doing so after the Blue Raiders retired the first two Phoenix batters in the inning. Back-to-back singles would score their first run of the game.

Leading 7-1 the Blue Raiders would score one run on three hits in the fourth. Harris and Kaluau produced back-to-back singles with one out as Samantha Luckett would then single to center field to score Harris from second.

Sizemore scored in the fifth inning to push the Blue Raiders lead to 9-1. She would single with one out in the inning but advance to third base when the Phoenix right fielder misplayed the ball. She was later driven home by Matlock on a sacrifice fly.

In jeopardy of losing via a run-rule Cumberland needed one run to keep the contest alive in the bottom half of the fifth. They would score the run they desperately needed, doing so on three hits.

Two scoreless innings would pass as the Blue Raiders would take game one by a 9-2 final score.

Hannah Epperson (12-1) recorded the win going 4-1/3 innings with two strikeouts, allowing just five hits. Taylor Slade came on in relief, allowing no hits against the eight batters she faced.

Game 2: Lindsey Wilson 7, Cumberland 0

Lindsey Wilson would once again get off to a good start, this time scoring four runs in the first inning. Pilgrim led off the game with a double as Sizemore then walked before they would advance into scoring position on a Phoenix wild pitch. Pilgrim scored when Matlock singled up the middle.

Kaluau would later hit a home run to straightaway center field to vault the LWC advantage to 4-0 after one inning.

The Blue Raiders would add two more runs in the fifth inning. Sizemore and Matlock led off the inning with doubles as Matlock's scored Sizemore. Luckett would then reach base on a fielding error by the Phoenix second baseman as Matlock would score on the play.

Matlock added to her impressive day at the plate in the seventh inning when she hit a solo home run to lead off. She finished the game going 4-for-4 at the plate as she scored three runs and batted in three more.

Annabelle Ramirez (12-0) went the distance in the circle to pick up the win. She struck out eight batters and allowed just five hits in her seven innings pitched.
