Reporter and her family climb Africa's tallest mountain

By Kirby Adams, Louisville Courier Journal

At 16,000 feet above sea level, with a cold relentless wind battering the orange nylon walls of our tent, I watched a guide carry the ailing hiker off and disappear into the cloud line below.

In that instant I found myself questioning my decision to bring the three most important people in my life -- my family -- on this mountaineering expedition. Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the famous Seven Summits -- the name given to the highest point on each continent. It is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. To get to there, my husband John Grantz and I traveled to Tanzania in East Africa with our daughters, Elliott, 21, and Jordan, 19.

At the age when our daughters have become busy with their own adult lives, we saw this as a last opportunity to experience an epic family adventure.

Kentuckians flunk test of U.S. history knowledge

By Bill Estep, Lexington Herald Leader

If you know how many amendments there are to the U.S. Constitution, what Susan B. Anthony did and who said "Give me liberty or give me death," you're in a rare group in Kentucky. Only 1 percent of state residents surveyed scored an A on a test of American history knowledge, according to results released Friday.

On the other end, 71 percent of Kentuckians made an F when answering 20 questions taken from the practice U.S. citizenship test, according to the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, which sponsored the survey.

Kentucky 1 of only 5 states to cut money for Higher Ed this year

By Morgan Watkins, Louisville Courier Journal

Kentucky was one of only five states that slashed funding for higher education this fiscal year, putting more pressure on public universities to save money and raise revenue without overburdening students with skyrocketing tuition rates.

The fallout from the 2008 recession hurt governments and public colleges across the country, but most states have finally stopped making cuts to the schools relying on their support, according to Grapevine, a joint project that involves Illinois State University and annually compiles data on states' higher education appropriations.

In Kentucky, however, budget reductions have become the new normal for publicly funded schools like the University of Louisville and Eastern Kentucky University.

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) today announced payment of more than $14.2 million in breeder awards from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Breeders' Incentive Fund (KTBIF). The Bloody Harpes: Part III

Previous columns in this series: The Bloody Harpes, Part I | The Bloody Harpes, Part II

By Mike Watson

Judge Rollin T. Hurt, native of Adair County, attorney, businessman, judge, and historian, wrote a series of articles for the Adair County News early in the last century on the early history and people of the county. Several articles dealt with the Harpe Brothers. Several years ago these articles were edited and published as Hurt's History of Adair County, containing the following in the words of Judge Hurt, with footnotes by the editor.

On their way to join their wives, when the Harpes had arrived near Steuben's Lick, in the present county of Hopkins, they stopped for the mid-day meal at the residence of a pioneer, whose name was James Tompkins. Since our first acquaintance with them, they had become very much improved in personal appearance. Each of them now wore a black cloth coat and pretended to be a Methodist preacher.

One of them, very reverently, returned thanks before the commencement of the meal. They were armed with rifles and each had a pair of holsters at his saddle.

Celebrating the life of good friend Judy Wallace Irvin

Carol Myers writes:
What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful lady! Yes, Carol and Judy were best friends for as long as I can remember. She knew Judy like no other. I grieve for Judy and also for Carol. We who knew her will be grieving for a long time. She was my friend, too. I saw her three times during her last days. She could still whisper, and I told her I loved her many times each time I saw her. She always replied with, "I love you, too," but in a faint whisper." I will forever treasure her friendship, but my memories of this precious lady will always be some of the sweetest.

Letter: Kudos for broadcasting article

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Wow, Jim! Thanks for all the work you've obviously put into bringing the past to life for us. Most of these names were a part of everyday conversations around my home and in the Sparksville Community.

My Mom who is still living began working at the Circle R during the late '50's and most of these folks frequented the restaurant as one might expect. Many of those names and associated stories, which I cannot remember, would be tossed around the kitchen table on a regular basis. --BJF

The ACHS Academic Team will advance to the State Championships in March

By Brett Reliford

The ACHS Academic Team continued their winning ways at the 2019 Governor’s Cup Region Championship on Saturday and as repeating District Champions earlier this year on January 26, 2019. At Region this Saturday, the team broke a school record by having 8 individual State Finals qualifications, and the Future Problem Solving team also qualified for the State Championships at the event once again.

Placing in the Top 5 at the Regional Championships is the threshold individuals must meet in order to advance to State, and the team had individuals place in five separate written assessments.
