Remember to keep campaign signs out of state right of way

By Amber Hale

As the November general election nears, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) reminds candidates and property owners that campaign signs, as well as other non-official signs, are not allowed on state highway rights of way.

Kentucky law and Transportation Cabinet policy prohibit the placement of non-official signs of any type - for campaigns, yard sales or other advertising - on state highway right of way, utility poles, fences and guardrails or on road signs. Depending on size and construction, illegally placed signs are a distraction and can be a safety issue for motorists when blocking the view of oncoming vehicles.

Owensboro lawmaker proposes expansion to concealed-carry

By James Mayse, The Messenger-Inquirer

A bill filed for consideration in next year's General Assembly would allow people with concealed-carry permits to take firearms into most government buildings. The bill was filed by Rep. Robert Goforth, an East Bernstadt Republican.

The bill would revise state concealed carry permits, allowing any permit holder to carry a concealed weapon in government or school facilities.

The law at present only allows certain persons, such as current or retired county attorneys, commonwealth's attorneys, judges, and current and retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed weapons "at all times and at all locations." Goforth said the bill was a response to public shootings.

Lexington Trane employees face uncertain future

By Cheryl Truman, Lexington Herald-Leader

In the 1960s, Lexington workers could get a job at one of the three big employers on the north side Lexington -- Trane, Square D or IBM typewriter -- and buy a middle-class home in the area's then-booming subdivisions.

Today, the IBM typewriter plant is long gone, the company having morphed into a printer company called Lexmark, which only employs 1,400 now in Lexington, down from 2,300 in 2015. Square D has become Schneider Electric and employs 515 people.

And recently, Trane announced it is closing after 55 years, a move that will leave 600 hourly workers without jobs. "I'm not sure what I'm going to do," said Scotty Hall, who has been with Trane for 27 years. "It's been a living, but you never know."
