Are we bypassing spring, going to summer temperatures?

By Linda Waggener

This week I was asked if I'd noticed we have bypassed spring and gone straight to summer weather -- 90 degrees in May. Yes, it has been duly noticed and I don't like it one bit. This is not a scientific report, just an observation, but a serious one.

A few years ago I worried about temperatures reaching 90 degrees in early June instead of late July and August. Now 90-degree heat has moved up into May. I want the full season of spring returned to Kentucky. I want 70-degree temperatures, only moving into the 80s as we get very near to Independence Day.

Robert Stone: Word list poem 16 Mar 2018

No peace can be unless: a word-list sonnet
By Robert Stone, 16 May 2018
Who has prepared to run a lengthy race
but suddenly must swim to reach far shore
will discombobulated seek safe place
where rest will flesh relax and mind restore.

When needed changes challenge hyphenate
with current disposition malcontent
responses may be sharply argulate
but opal like soft colors represent.

No peace can be unless peace everywhere
for new age reinvented Germany
is waiting for a chance to foolish snare
with songs of glory, pleading urgency.
Arugula is tangy taste acquired,
diversity prevails long as admired.
~ Robert Stone, 16 May 2018
Word List: argulate – discombobulate – Germany – hyphenate – malcontent – opal – peace – relax – run – swim – arugula (the word suggested but we think spell check changed it to argulate)

KY earns national engineering award for Versailles Rd. project

By Naitore Djigbenou

Frankfort, KY - Representatives for the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and Louisville-based Qk4 Inc. presented the prestigious ACEC Engineering Award of Excellence to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) leaders during a ceremony in Frankfort this week for a roadway project that significantly improves safety and traffic flow in Lexington near the Keeneland Race Course.

Qk4's design incorporated a first-of-its-kind "left overloop" that transformed a previous right-turn loop into a left-turn overpass. The unique design resolved safety issues at the interchange, where traffic crashes had occurred regularly. It also offered a cost-effective solution that was below the original budget and avoided impacts to nearby Calumet Farm.

U.S. Representative, First District of Kentucky

The Farm Bill is a critical piece of legislation that shapes agriculture and food policy. It impacts everything from commodity programs and farm credit, to rural development and food and nutrition programs. This bill influences the future of American farmers and our rural economy, those who produce our food and supply many of the goods and resources we rely on as a country. It is important that we have a Farm Bill in place that benefits farmers and the rural economy, especially when rural America has seen a 52% drop in net farm income over the past five years.

Query: Anyone remember Inis McKinney winning baby contest

The year was 1947 or 1948, writer thinks

Janis Tucker writes:
My mom, Inis McKinney, was in a baby contest at the fair and won a blue ribbon. We were hoping that it may have been in one of the newspaper. And I thought you may have some information about it. It would have been in 1947-1948 and her name is Inis McKinney . Thank you or one of your readers for your time and help. - Janice Janice Tucker
Thanks, Janis - Rounding up the usual suspects, it's likely that the newspaper in 1947-1948 would have been the Adair County News.. One would assume the fair would have been the Adair County Fair in Columbia. If different please let us know. We hope one of our readers will know the answer. - EW
