Freed-Hardeman advances to NAIA Softball World Series

The Lions take Opening Round NAIA Softball championship game with 7-3 victory over Saint Xavier in the 'Was-necessary game at Marilyn D. Sparks Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road. Earlier in the day, Lindsey Wilson lost to Freed-Hardeman 3-2, ending their season with a 40-16 record.

COLUMBIA, KY - (Tue 15 May 2018 - Third-seeded Freed-Hardeman (TN) defeated fourth-seeded Saint Xavier in the Championship Game of the 2018 NAIA Softball Opening Round - Columbia (KY) Bracket at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.



The Lions (35-14) outhit the Cougars (29-17) 12-7 in the game. Kaylyn Graham led the way for Freed-Hardeman with four hits and driving in four runs. Caitlyn Carter and Hannah Wright each had two hits.

The Lions struck first in the first inning. Carter led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Graham drove in Carter with a single to center field to put Freed-Hardeman out in front 1-0. After Tori Keilman reached second on a Lion error in the second, Makenzie Prince retired the next three batters striking out two of them.

Freed-Hardeman added three runs in the top of the third on three hits and a Saint Xavier error. Graham hit an RBI double to deep left-center field and on the same play an error allowed another run to score increase the Lion lead to 3-0. Annalise Jarnagin drove in another run to make it 4-0.

Tori Williams got the first hit of the game for the Cougars with a two-out single in the bottom of the third inning. Wright increased the Freed-Hardeman lead to 5-0 with an RBI-single up the middle in the top of the fifth. Graham hit a two-RBI double in the top of the sixth to increase the Lion lead to 7-0.

Frankie Demack got the Cougars on the board in the seventh inning with a double to deep left-center field to make it 7-1. Williams then made it 7-2 with a single and Lexxi Lux had an RBI-single to trim the deficit to 7-3. Mallory Spurlock then struck out the next two batters to clinch the 7-3 victory.

Prince improves to 16-6 on the season pitching 6-1/3 innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Spurlock picked up her first save of the season pitching 2/3 innings of relief striking out two.
