To pull in or to back in? That is the question

"I prefer pulling in first and backing later. But those who prefer backing in on arrival and pulling out later often feel strongly their method is safer. After all, they are backing into a space free of moving traffic and then pulling out later when they have better vision and visibility to other traffic. But from what I've observed, backing into a space and keeping it equally distant between the lines is a real challenge -- particularly for those driving those big pick-ups. Some do it well. Some don't." - DAVID GREER

Don't ask me why -- I suppose I have nothing better to do -- but I like watching drivers park their vehicles in restaurant parking lots while I wait for my food. Upon finding an empty space, each driver in need of parking their vehicle must decide quickly to pull in or back into the space. From what I have seen, most people pull in. But some drivers prefer backing in -- an action requiring more skill, in my book.

But each decision carries its own pros and cons. Pulling in is faster, easier. It makes it easier to park squarely between the lines. A nice quality appreciated by the perfectionists among us. But later, the driver will have to back out of the space. If this is done in a relatively low-occupancy lot, no biggie. But if it's a busy lot -- or even worse -- requires backing out into traffic, watch out. Pray your insurance is adequate.

Judy (Irvin), Susan (Chambers), and I were invited to an Octogenarian Festival and the host told us it was on his family farm. We were to come no earlier than ten, eat at eleven, and sneak out anytime thereafter. He was also celebrating his eightieth birthday, officially, as he declared, entering the kingdom of "Geezerdom." "I am an official Geezer now," he said as he addressed his attendees.

Remembering: Mr. Brooks Coomer - A Really Good Man

Brooks Coomer - February 24,1923 - April 24, 2018

'I will profoundly miss Mr. Coomer - one of the finest men I have ever met.' - GEORGE CRITZ
Click on headline for complete tribute

By George Critz

I met Mr. Coomer my first year of coaching at ACHS where he was principal at the time. He was a dedicated educator for 35 years, and as principal, he once told me he knew every students' name at the school. AMAZING! At that time there would have been over 1,000 students. As a former principal myself, this to me seems impossible.
He never married so his immediate family was always the people of Adair Co. Service to these people was his top priority. He would take athletes to and from practice and games for many years, which helped coaches (like me) but, much more importantly, he was helping Adair Counties youth. He loved and followed sports and was doing his part to help his local sports teams. He continued this long after he retired.

On Sundays and any other day the church doors were open he would drive people to and from church. He also would take people to and from doctor appointments. In other words, many weeks he would taxi people seven days a week. He did this as long as he physically could.

He always worked for what he thought was right and was very loyal to whatever cause he believed in.

I will profoundly miss Mr. Coomer - one of the finest men I have ever met.

Sincerely,

/s/ George A. Critz

Mike Watson: Story in old Columbia Spectator raises question

One item reprinted in the Stanford, KY, Interior Journal in 1873 piques interest in Adair County Historian Mike Watson's mind. Maybe someone can help him with the name of Campbell man of the "Neetsville" community whose arm was amputated after he was injured in an explosion of a gun during Christmas.

By Mike Watson

A cool, rainy morning is keeping me inside today. So I'm searching for an answer to a question from the past. First, the Columbia Spectator, a newspaper founded here in 1869, continued with some short interruptions, as a weekly paper through 1910.

Only about 125 issues of that important source have survived, but occasionally one or two appear and are made available. Other newspapers, some even outside Kentucky, with access to the Spectator, would insert in their own columns news from other towns, including Columbia and Adair County. My question is at the end of the section below:
