Is this your big, brown beautiful puppy?

2018-02-06 - Gradyville, Adair County, KY - Photo By Amelia McGough.
This beautiful brown mastiff puppy came to our house a few days ago - we live near the Gradyville turn off of West 80.  He doesn't seem to want to leave so we got him a new collar - the old one was choking him.  If he belongs to you come get him. If no one claims him we might just keep him. He's started to settle down and is a pretty good boy. - Amelia McGough, amelmcg@gmail.com

Carol's new mission in life, being a motivational speaker, is taking a new turn, into the eulogy business.
Next earlier column: Carol Perkins: Writer finds new mission in life

By Carol Perkins

A couple of years ago my sister-in-law, Carolyn Berry, made an announcement. "I want you to be the speaker at my funeral. I want it light, funny, and happy; not sad. I thought you would be the one to do this. (I had said a few words at her son's burial.) Plus, you will draw a crowd. All my friends love your articles, and when people hear you're the speaker, I'll have a larger crowd."

George Rice: Mr. Arnold Coomer really loved pawpaws

Memories of Coomer's Store
George Rice writes:
I bought a Homko riding lawn mower probably in the late 70's. It was a friction drive with handle bars steering system. I'm pretty sure that I also bought a chain saw from him. One of the outstanding things that I remember about him was his love for paw paws. He told me that he could eat a dozen any day. --George Rice

Bobby Moore's story reportedly going viral - Jerry would have loved it

By Linda Waggener

I can just picture Jerry Moore smiling down on her family as the photo of her true love Bobby, sitting beside her one last time, is reportedly 'going viral'! She loved people and laughter and music and dancing, she'd have loved this excitement.

I'm so proud of our friends in the Moore family for their openness. It has been an honor that they had writer/photographer April Shepperd ask ColumbiaMagazine.com to print Bobby and Jerry's love story, kicking off its social media journey around the world.

Bobby and his children wanted it public to help others in times of grief -- I think they have done that.

Robert Stone: A sonnet for my birthday

That all is not my own: a sonnet for my birthday
by Robert Stone
I need some explanation good enough
to satisfy my wishes unfulfilled
and keep my expectations strong and tough
so I will make it up as best I’m skilled.

When criticism comes I often choose
to claim each accusation as true fault
and greet denunciations as old news
so I can limit spread and call the halt.

When praises boost I must remember well
to realize that all is not my own
and carefully acknowledge what friends tell
so I can watch against pride overgrown.

Most wonderful are words that stir the mind
from places intellect will never find,
