Lonnie Coomer: The Rialto Theater location?

Comments re article 94768 The Movies When talkies came to Columbia's Rialto Theater

Lonnie W. Coomer writes:
Where was the Rialto Theater located on the square? What buildings were next to the theater? When I was very young I went to the movies there, but do not remember the location. - LONNIE W COOMER
Thanks for the question: The Rialto was located in part of what is now the Bank of Columbia. Facing that building, from the left, Russell & Co. was at the corner of Burkesville & the Square; next, separated by a stairs entrance, was the Rialto, then the Bank of Columbia, and at the far right in what is now the Bank of Columbia, the Model Barber Shop.- EW

Mike Watson sends links to photos and a story which further illustrate the location of the Rialto: 1) Mystery photo, Columbia, in days of Rialto Theatre, Russell & Co., posted 2014-12-14 from Mike Watson's collection. Wave as you go by, it may help property sales

By Linda Waggener

Stopping in the Adair County PVA office for any changes that might have happened in auto values before going to the Clerk's office for new licenses provided the opportunity to meet some folks thinking of buying property here. The man said, “I told Tammy Stotts (realtor) that we were not going to buy until we look around, we are going to Lexington to see what's there." He said they'd just returned from Danville. "After we’d looked there my wife said let’s go back to Adair County," he said. "I told her OK, why? She said because up here nobody waves at you in passing."

Poetry by Robert Stone: No rushing into: a sonnet

No rushing into
a sonnet for the birthday of Lisa Comperry
Each sunrise is a new experience,
an on-time only opportunity,
not subject to deferred austere pretense
of having wanted to commune with me.

Each noon on cloudless day is chance to check
if there is instant when we cast no shade,
but always players must advance on deck
and winners struggle to outlast blockade.

Each sunset is a steady welcoming,
no rushing into dark, yet no delay,
inviting daily cares expel the sting
of big and little things that go astray.

All nights deserve to have their special charms
to lull to rest for morrow’s new alarms.
~ Robert Stone, 31 December 2017
