Sano, Ono, and Uno -- know where these towns are? Don Knifley writes: When former mayor, Pat Bell, was director of LCADD, he and others from the district were in a meeting I think in Washington D.C. When they introduced themselves and told where they were from, it was Sano, Ono, and Uno in Kentucky. Do you know the counties? --Don KnifleyComments re article 92070 Sano KY how it got its name Don, I can say yes on two of them, but have to yield to others who may know where the third is in the state. Sano, we know, is in Russell County/Adair County. Uno, I know because we went there to visit relatives when I was a child. We'd ask from the back seat where were going and Dad would say "Uno" and my brother and I would say, "no we don't know" and that would go round and round until we got silly with laughter and finally reached our destination. Uno, KY is located in north eastern Hart County, north of Horse Cave, KY on Highway 31E. Now, if you don't know and I don't know, we're ready for someone to tell us which county can claim Ono, KY. - Linda 2017-08-09 20:44:25 | Comments | Printable version

A bird named Boy - growing up in Metcalfe County during wartime As a young girl, she marveled at the tender moments when her hunter brothers were so kind to the pigeon they saved; and remembers, later, when they had all gone off to World War II, the times her father would shush the family while reports from the fronts came in over the radio . . . LW Click on headline for complete story from Geniece Marcum's stories of growing up in Edmonton, KY written by daughter, Linda Marcum Waggener These observations were made by ten or eleven-year-old Geniece Leftwich Marcum from her growing up years, the youngest of nine children in a farmhouse just outside of Edmonton, KY. She told the story of a bird named Boy. Back before World War II took them from the little girl, her Leftwich brothers, Robert, Russell, Ray and Rondyl, shared a big drafty upstairs room overlooking the smokehouse and fields they worked, across the hall from the girls area. There were five girls but two had already married and followed their husbands out west to California at the time. Adair County Fiscal Court Report 08 Aug 2017 - Report In the 09 August 2017 regular session of Fiscal Court
Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Ed Waggener Adair County's revenue and budget problems slowed a possible move to join with the City of Columbia and the Columbia-Adair County Economic Development effort to hire Retail Strategies/Retail Academy to conduct a survey of opportunities for additional retail sales in Adair County, putting the plan on hold for at least brief time. The contribution by the county would have allowed the plan for a modest, $15,000 survey by the Birmingham, Al group, to move forward immediately; the city had voted to fund it's part of the program, contingent on anticipated approval by Fiscal Court last night, Tuesday, August 8, 2017, with CJE Mike Stephens presiding. Sano, KY: how it got its name By Linda Waggener "Each little community in the old days had it's own post office," Jean Waggener Cravens remembers, "like Aunt Hallie had in Knifley, you know where everyone would gather and look for correspondence. "Well, in the Sano area of Adair County the people continued suggesting ideas to come up with a name for its post office but nothing ever seemed to get accepted. So finally, the locals just decided, "whatever we send they'll just say no, so lets just call our place 'Sano'. And so it was."
