Adair County's mysterious death, 1916

A story of a murder? Or was it?
Click on headline to read the whole fascinating account and learn the outcome.

By Jim

In the late summer of 1916, Adair County buzzed over a mysterious death. The Pellyton community newsletter simply informed News readers that Mr. Frank Holt, a man in his mid-60s and a resident of that area, had died recently in a tree-felling mishap. A front page article in the September 20th edition, however, muddied the waters by commenting, "It was first reported [in Columbia] that he had met with foul play, and later it was told that a tree fell on him...People in the neighborhood are shaking their heads, and a full investigation will be made."

Poetry by Robert Stone: My Poor Show

My poor show
A word list sonnet by Robert Stone
Those health promoters always tell me breathe
but I must be uninnervated there
for respiration actions do not seethe
I often not remembering to care.

How to be better brings deluge of hints
to shatter habits and to sweat my sins,
to save my soul from jealousy’s green tints
to calmly know my losses and my wins.

The stage of life will never let me go.
It heats my passions to proclaim I am
but those tomatoes shatter my poor show,
suggesting my decisions are but sham.

We poets even though we splotch our claim
believe our words will find a future fame.

~ Robert Stone, 15 September 2016
A word list poem is a challenge to include all the words in a list in the poem you write. In this case the words were: splotch – tomato – shatter – sweat – green – heat – deluge – remember – innervate – breathe. These words were choices of the audience at the August Poetry in the Boro open mic reading in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the poems to be written for the September meeting.

By Kevin Kelly/Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

FRANKFORT, KY (15 Sep 2016) - Anglers treasure the fall months in Kentucky.

The shortening periods of daylight and the cooler, drier air bring welcome relief from summer and bring on the fall colors. It's during this time of transition that some of the best fishing of the year can be had.

For trout anglers, fall offers a smorgasbord of opportunities.

100 years ago: revivals, sorghum making, and a new church

Revival season had begun, with some impressive statistics being reported: "The one held at the Methodist church in Milltown had been particularly fruitful in plucking sinners from the clutches of hell,' Jim writes, then quoting report in the News, 'there had been twenty conversions and eight additions to the church.'
Click on headline for the complete report, compiled by Jim, who, while concentrating on revivals, also comments on livestock deals and dealers, and gives a token nod - hopefully prescient of more to come - about the brass band at Lindsey Wilson College

Mid-September 1916 found Adair Countians enjoying cooler weather, heating up in religion, puzzling over a mysterious death, and bustling about in general as summer drew to a close and autumn approached.

A rain the previous Thursday ushered in a change in weather. The Gradyville correspondent asserted that "Friday [September 15th] was the coolest day we have in some time," and a two-line front page item in the September 20th edition noted a light frost had graced the land come Saturday morning.
