Educator Jane Reed celebrates retirement

By Wes Feese
Media Relations, Adair County Schools

After more than three decades in the Adair County School system, Jane Reed celebrated her last day at work Wednesday. Although she was a curriculum specialist at Adair County Elementary School at the time of her retirement, Reed spent most of her career at John Adair Middle School, where she was a beloved science teacher to an entire generation of Adair County students.

"Jane Reed is what every teacher--young and old--strives to be," ACES Principal Steve Burton says. "She's an absolutely great teacher and everyone knows that but for those of us that know her well, she's an even better person."

Prior to her last day, several dozen friends, family, and colleagues both past and present gathered at ACES Tuesday afternoon for a celebration in Reed's honor.

The Mystery Sinkhole: Picture of Location

2016-09-01 - Off Pineview Drive, below LBN Parkway, across LBN from Blue Raider Stadium - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Of course Joyce Coomer was right with the clue given for the mystery sinkhole. From the photo, it might have been any place. It's located on the access road off Pineview Road in Columbia, KY to a Columbia/Adair County Utilities District sewer lift station in the middle of the photo. The guardrail in the top of the frame is on the Louie B. Nunn/Cumberland Parkway, beyond which is Blue Raider Stadium. The farmland at left is a 12 acre lot at the intersection owned by Junior Stotts and others. The sinkhole was discovered by Columbia Street Superintendent Donnie Rowe, who is working on a plan to fill it. See original clue photo: Where in the World is It: Mystery photo

By Barbara J Fox

Kentucky's top health officials are warning state medical providers and community leaders of a pending public health crisis involving dangerous drugs.

Kentucky Department for Public Health Commissioner Dr. Hiram Polk said officials wanted to issue the warning before the holiday weekend, when they expect a rise in recreational drug use.

"Recent law enforcement reports cite a new supply of heroin laced with the drug Fentanyl coming into the state - especially Louisville," said Dr. Polk. "These drugs are much more toxic and can cause respiratory failure and death.

Elk Tours Offered At Two Kentucky State Parks

Two state parks in eastern Kentucky will offer guests unique elk viewing tours this fall and winter. Participants are encouraged to bring cameras. The largest elk herds are located on privately owned lands that are normally closed to the public. This is one of the few opportunities available for the public to see the greatest number of elk.

The return of elk to the region is considered to be one of Kentucky's biggest wildlife management success stories. The animals, after being gone from the state for 150 years, were returned in 1997. They now number around 10,000.

Visitors to Jenny Wiley and Buckhorn Lake State Resort Parks can stay at a state park lodge or cottage to enjoy one of these unique tours.

KY Afield Outdoors: Sept is quota hunt application month

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - As the carefree days of summer give way to the first days of September, it's finally starting to feel like fall in Kentucky.

A cold front promised to break the stranglehold of heat and humidity just as wingshooters returned to dove fields for the traditional Sept. 1 season opener.

The quota hunt application period in Kentucky also coincides with September's arrival. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources administers quota hunts across the state for deer, pheasant, quail, upland birds and waterfowl. Throughout September, hunters can apply for these opportunities online at fw.ky.gov or by calling 1-877-598-2401. The minimum charge to apply is $3.

"People should consider applying to be able to hunt new areas that they've never hunted before," said Chris Garland, assistant wildlife division director with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "They're also great for people who don't have access to private lands to hunt.

Wants opinions: Buy bottled water only?

Trish Zatkoff writes:
From what articles Ive seen concerning our water, I feel that it might be better to drink bottled water . . . I wonder: Do CM readers concur?
Trish Zatkoff - Thanks. Let's see what readers say. Certainly it's been unpleasant to drink the water from CAUD this time of the year. We're probably over the worst. Nature is, hopefully taking care of that. Ironic thing is, within yards of the plant good tasting tap water is coming through the pipes, some of it into Adair County for a lucky few. More ironically, the water comes from the same source, Green River Lake. - EW
