Story on The Free Hills of Celina, TN - Link

There's a fascinatiing story about the Free Hills community near Celina, Clay County, TN, Tennessee community founded by freed slaves fights extinction by Joey Garrison at "5 on your side."

Former editors of The Clay Statesman who still reside in Adair & Metcalfe Counties will remember the community fondly and the mention of the restaurant most enjoyed there on some of their twice weekly trips from Columbia, where the paper was printed, and/or Burkesville, after the paper was owned by the Cumberland County News to Celina. Others will find the mention of its Rosenwald school, and the similarity to Coe Ridge in Cumberland County, KY of equal fascination. The story is illustrated with photos.

Cynthia Meyer: The mystery plant is Jimsonweed

Cynthia Meyer writes:
Did not get a good look at the leaves, but am wondering if some call it Jimsonweed? Which grows in barn lot areas and other areas void of vegetation. Usually gets a thorny apple shaped seed pod in the fall.

As a member of the nightshade family, livestock chooses not to eat the highly toxic plant unless forced to eat it if no other feed source is available. --Cynthia Meyer

JIM:...but it spent the night at a Holiday Inn Express!

The following account of frontier bartering, although somewhat romanticized, makes interesting reading. (It doesn’t pertain directly to Adair County, but it did spend the night at a well-known motel chain, thus adding gravitas, panache, and a veneer of respectability to a curriculum vitae of otherwise questionable origin and content.) The article (source unattributed) appeared in the October 5, 1910 edition of the Adair County News.

Legal tender

In this age of progress and of fixed system of coinage and currency–the age of dollars, halves, quarters, dimes, nickels, to say nothing of the little brown penny, which is the most insignificant little piece that we Americans will countenance–few people pause to think of the olden days, when money was coined in so many forms that it required unceasing watchfulness to keep abreast of it.

A Favorite story in Adair County Aviation/Aerospace history

"MEMORIES of STREEVAL FIELD: The day Momma didn't throw Kenny from the plane" documents a great story in Columbia/Adair County aviation history. It first appeared on Columbia Magazine.com over 10 years ago. It is a confessional letter from Debbie Sinclair, revealing all about the thing she did when she was five, and how retribution was severely dealt her right here on earth, in Streeval Field, right under the scene of the crime.

By Debbie Sinclair

My family owned the Streeval Field Airport for many years.

When I was about five, my brother Kenny was born.

Frank Dickerson: Words as he hustles through 8th Decade

Click on headline for item with photo of Frank Dickerson, world travelled now, but still looking like his Knifley HS days - with a bit more facial hair and a more urbane air

It becomes more and more difficult to keep the old ties as we hustle through our 8th decade. I still have a few of the old Knifley High School and Berea College mates as correspondents, but it is a new world out there and here. - Frank Dickerson.

The Jenny: Visit a moment of rare air in Columbia

Robert Cumming writes:
Certainly a moment in rare air for Columbia with a Glenn Curtis designed Army Air Corps Jenny, a WWI era wood, fabric and wire government mule from 100 years ago. Allied aero squadrons fought the Kaisers Red Baron over Germany and France with these, and later early barnstormers criss cross the US in the twenties with surplus ones teaching thousands to fly. --Robert Cumming

The accompanying picture was taken today - July 9, 2016 - over my house in Cane Valley of a weather phenomenon referred to as a circumzenithal arc.

I've only seen two of them in my lifetime.

It's also referred to as a smiling or upside down rainbow and it's usually missed by most folks because it is high in the sky. - Robert Ellis
