Whitfield supports Opioid Package; lauds Inclusion of NASPER By Robert Hankins News from Rep. Ed Whitfield's office WASHINGTON, D.C. (8 Jul 2016) - U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield (KY-01) today voted in favor of the conference agreement reached by the conferees for the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) of 2016. This legislation represents both House and Senate efforts to improve access to treatment and prevent prescription drug abuse. Included within the agreement is the National All Schedules Prescription Electronic Reporting Reauthorization (NASPER) Act, an initiative Whitfield has spearheaded since the 107th Congress as a means of combating prescription drug abuse. Whitfield released the following statement upon passage: "Our country is in the midst of a drug overdose epidemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were approximately 28,647 deaths in the United States in 2014 as a result of drug overdose. 1,077 of those deaths occurred in the state of Kentucky alone, placing Kentucky in the top 5 in the country. In response to these alarming statistics, I have worked for over a decade towards the implementation and reauthorization of NASPER, which provides funding for prescription drug monitoring programs and encourages states to share information. NASPER (Public Law 109-60) was signed into law by President Bush in 2005 but expired in 2010. I am proud to see CARA extend funding for NASPER for five years until 2021 and urge the President to sign this important agreement." This story was posted on 2016-07-10 05:32:36
