Kentucky's fallen law enforcement officers honored at ceremony

Gov. Matt Bevin served as keynote speaker. Gov. Matt Bevin said he hopes these names which are fresh in our minds today will continue to be remembered. As a father who lost his 17-year-old daughter in an automobile crash, Bevin said he will never forget the names of the officers who spoke to his family that tragic day. Adair Countian Daniel Neil Ellis one of fallen law enforcement officers honored.

RICHMOND, KY (23 May 2016) - When Covington Police Detective Anthony Jansen became old enough to enter the field of law enforcement, he said he thought often about what it would have been like for his father to witness him following in his footsteps.

"After graduating the academy, the first thing I did was go to the cemetery," Jansen told the crowd today during the 17th annual Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony. "I stood before my father's headstone in my class A uniform - something I felt I needed to do, because my mother always said my father took pride in his uniform. I wanted him to be proud of me. Throughout my life as I carry out my duties with the Covington Police Department, one thing is for certain that I think daily about my father."

Adair Co. School District members attend school safety training

Meeting attended by Dean of Students Robbie Harmon, School Resource Officer Kevin Atwood, and ACES Principal Steve Burton. Preparedness is a priority in Adair County Schools. "What we do is train our students, we train our staff, we train our administrators and we get with our first responders. This is what we know, so if we've never talked about it before and it's in a manual somewhere, it's not really our reality. With our school safety preparedness, we work through that.' - Dean Harmon said.

Memorial Day Tribute from Doug Beard

By Doug Beard

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those dedicated citizens and corporate sponsors who took the time and provided the American flags which were placed on the graves of our nation’s veterans in the Columbia Cemetery. It exhibits great respect and honors those who fought to keep America a free and independent nation.

As I observed the flag, placed on the final resting place of my father, a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict, it provided a very special moment of reflection.

Also, two of my favorite quotes - accompanying photo- which have the greatest meaning for me during this Memorial Day week were delivered by 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. I often reflect on many of the historic words of one of our greatest presidents each time I pass his birthplace in Hodgenville.
