Amy Pike: Signs won't be voting March 22, the citizens will

Personal commentary

Amy Pike writes:
I am appalled by the comments of "anonymous." First of all, it is very cowardly to write a letter placing blame on someone when you have no proof whatsoever and refuse to sign your name to it. As stated by others, vandalism has occurred on both sides and I know that no one in the PAC group condones this. The signs will not be voting on March 22, the citizens will. One thing, Anonymous, that I feel you should seriously consider is when you point one finger out - you have have three more pointing back at you so point wisely. If you are so concerned, please step out from behind your anonymity and sign your name to your comments. What are you afraid of after all? Or maybe you were the one who vandalized the signs yourself and then made these unfounded accusations. - Amy Pike

Investigation shows 'natural causes' led to Lincoln Village death

Medical examination finds that natural causes led to tragic death at Lincoln Village Juvenile Detention Center

Frankfort, KY - Medical examiners have determined that a teenage girl who passed away at Lincoln Village Juvenile Detention Center died in her sleep from an irregular heartbeat, Kentucky Justice Secretary John Tilley reported today.

Following up on his commitment to transparency, Secretary Tilley provided an update on three separate investigations, including an autopsy that ruled out trauma and injury as contributing factors in the Jan. 11 tragedy,

"I remain saddened by this loss and want to extend my heartfelt prayers and sympathies to the family," Secretary Tilley said. "I've pledged from the beginning that we will spare no resources in determining what happened to this young lady and act swiftly to address and correct any misconduct at Lincoln Village. Today, all evidence points to natural causes."

The Secretary, who took office in late December, also ordered release of surveillance video from inside the facility to the family. The family will receive a full copy of the footage - totaling about 60 hours - once Kentucky State Police closes its investigation.

The White House, Washington: Supreme Court nominee at 10amCT/11amET

From President Barack Obama

Today, I will announce the person whom I believe is eminently qualified to sit on the Supreme Court.

As President, it is both my constitutional duty to nominate a Justice and one of the most important decisions that I -- or any president -- will make.

I've devoted a considerable amount of time and deliberation to this decision. I've consulted with legal experts and people across the political spectrum, both inside and outside government. And we've reached out to every member of the Senate, who each have a responsibility to do their job and take this nomination just as seriously.

Please join me in the Rose Garden at 11:00am Eastern for my announcement.

Statement from the Governor’s Office on House Budget Proposal

Commentary

By Jessica Ditto
News from Gov. Matt Bevin's Communications Office

FRANKFORT, KY (Mar. 15, 2016) - The following is a statement from Governor Bevin’s Communications Director Jessica Ditto on the House budget proposal: “With only 12 days left in the 2016 legislative session, it is encouraging to see the House Democrats finally respond to the budget we put forward back in January. We are pleased to see that they clearly got the message from the people of Kentucky who are fed up with mortgaging their children’s future through bonding billions of new debt. And yet, their proposed budget once again continues the bad habit of spending one-time funds for recurring expenses. With little regard for the future, it also strips away the permanent fund dedicated for pensions and unforeseen emergencies. The Governor looks forward to working with the House and Senate as the process moves forward, to ensure the ultimate enactment of a fiscally responsible budget.”

Carol Perkins: Grandkids put spark in eye, bounce in step

A heartwarming story for those of us who enjoy life's greatest pleasure: Being grandparents. It brings to mind a favorite statement about these fabulous people, from the late J.C. Marshall of Columbia, who after being a grandfather for a short period of time said, "Now I know why they are called 'Grand.'" Carol has come up with another favorite comment on the subject, during a visit to Metcalfe County by her Texas grandchildren and thinking of their departure, "We will many other adventures before they leave for home and I will be dragging by the time they leave, but having them here puts a spark in my eyes and a bounce in my step. I miss watching them grow up."
Next previous Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Memories of Fluffy thwart urges to adopt new dog

By Carol Perkins

Our Texas grandchildren are spending their Spring Break with us. By the time you read this, they will be on the road back to Austin. Nothing is as much fun or as exhausting as a week with a twelve, ten, and an eight-year- old with another ten year old thrown into the mix, even if only for a weekend. We keep them busy, so they don't have time to pick and poke at each other or argue over bedtime, taking baths (who goes first) and who told on the other one for each infraction.

Kevin Reynolds: In Support of Tim Baker

Kevin Reynolds writes:
First off why would you not reappoint someone when they have done nothing but straightened up and cleaned up the messes that the previous appointees have allowed to take place and try to put the CAUD Back on the right track and run it like the business that it is supposed to be. If not for Mr Baker CAUD would be thousands more dollars in debt and no more progress than we were 4 years ago. Mr Baker was an asset to the CAUD Board and in my opinion CJE Stephens made a mistake by not reappointing Mr Baker as Chairman . - Kevin Reynolds
