The class is a forerunner of things to come. When the new Adair Community & Technical Learning Center - that's the temporary name for now - is built, adult classes will expand from from welding, which is currently being offered, to include Industrial Technology, Robotics, Electronics, PLLC Controls, and others.

Tuesday, March 15, was the second night of the first Gas Metal Arc Welding classes taking place on the Adair County Schools Campus, in partnership with the Workforce Solutions Department at Somerset Community College and the Lake Cumberland Area Development District. This first group of adult learners range in age from their early 20's to late 40's and come from not only Adair County but Metcalfe, Taylor, Russell, and Cumberland counties. They are a diverse group but they all seemed to be engrossed in learning process.

Karl Watson, Associate Professor from Somerset Community College is teaching the class and has a great demeanor about himself. I was highly impressed that on students second night, Professor Watson was already beginning hands-on learning and allowing students to actually weld and get their hands dirty. This opportunity as well as the ones forthcoming for the adults in our area will change many lives for the better, not only economically, but will allow them to learn skills which will help secure employment close to home.

Eventually , these adult classes will expand from welding, which is currently being offered, to include Industrial Technology, Robotics, Electronics, PLLC Controls, and others.

These classes will be held in the new Adair Community and Technical Learning Center which will be constructed on Indian Drive across from the Adair County High School.

Adair County High Schools students will also have the opportunity to attend these classes as well.

The new facility is being funded by state and federal grants.

This new facility will serve both Adair County Schools students and Adult learners and offer two year technical degrees in partnership with Somerset Community College and other participating agencies.

The advantages this new program will provide for all students who attend include obtaining a two year degree right here at home, and they will be highly qualified for advanced manufacturing positions, and there are numerous job opportunities within a 40 minute driving range.

Everyone in our district is proud to be a part of such a forward thinking, community improvement project.

Shamarie Harper, the writer, is media coordinator for the Adair County School District
