School in session, but learning, honoring Veterans on their day

Agrees with Peggy Fudge's idea

George Kolbenschlag writes:
I think Peggy Fudge's idea for veterans' day is right on. Another day off is just another day off and accomplishes little except inconveniencing working parents. Make it a time of reflection and learning about why we have a day honoring our veterans. And do it across the entire spectrum of classes. - George Kolbenschlag

Letter: Reader from England sends thoughts on wet/dry

Penny Day writes:
Dear Sir:
I live in the UK and have a close friend who studies at the Lindsey Wilson College. I follow your fine magazine so I can keep up with the news in the area where she is studying. The laws in the UK are very different and i wanted to offer my own thoughts on the matter.

Here in the UK it is very difficult to own a gun and i certainly could not just walk in to a shop to buy one. However i can go to my local pub and to any supermarket and buy alcohol. Pubs are an important part of our communities and bring everyone together. We are not forced to choose alcohol but we do have the choice to buy it if we so wish. It brings a lot of business in too. I find it hard to understand that the people of KY can go and buy a gun in ten minutes or so but cannot buy a beer if they want one. I believe there is a lot of support there for this to change, and surely it is better for your community to have more control and put the bootleggers out of business with their illegal sales. I understand you have a rally there today and that the church are against it. I feel it is a shame they cannot compromise and put their energy into educating people about the sensible use of alcohol and allow their community to make the money instead of the bootleggers. Alcohol has nothing to do with religion, just like nicotine, caffeine and fast food, its a personal choice.

Yours sincerely, --Penny Day

Letter: Is this the progress we need?

Randy Young writes:
Voting for alcohol: is this the progress the county needs? A lot of times our kids or grandkids stop to purchase gas, they will be tempted or even in a grocery store that sells alcohol. Really think about what progress you want for your kids or grandkids.

We all want progress, but is alcohol the progress we need? I have 12 grandkids that I want to see run and play ball and dance and so on.

Just a friendly reminder: a mature Christian should avoid others to stumble by drinking. Romans 14-21: It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. --Randy Young

Commentary: Wet vs. Dry in Adair County

See also: Tracking the discussion: wet vs dry in Adair County KY

Personal commentary by Doug Beard

Author's Note: This is a follow-up article to my in-depth discussion of "wet" vs. "dry" which was featured in Columbia Magazine on February 11th (Commentary: Wet vs. Dry in Adair County). I hope that everyone will revisit this important article before making your decision on March 22nd. It's lengthy but it provides an expanded overview of this important issue.

My goal is that my articles will cause positive and meaningful discussions on a decision which will have lasting impact the future of our county.

From my original article, I would like to re-emphasize five points that I feel are most critical to consider in this debate.

CM honors reader request on Wet/Dry issue from 100 years ago

A reader asks: Given the tenor of the times in Auld Adair, would it be prudent to repost this, or would it be too much like asking the devil if he had a light? The brief item is by JIM, late of and a righteous dude from the Sacred Triangle (Sano-Ono-Esto) of Russell County, KY; Lindsey Wilson College, and near Occidental Kentucky. It is appropriate, timely, and worthy of the Main Page of ColumbiaMagazine.com.

By JIM

The following appeared in the News fivescore and ten years ago this summer.

It is not right to advocate trafficking in whisky in any way, but if it is to be sold and drunk, what is the best way for the young men of the county and town of Columbia -- open saloons, or the way we have it now? It is said that within the last twelve months one man has delivered in Adair County, in jugs, over $4,000 worth of whisky, the most of it being expressed in this place. Add to this sum the amounts sold by other parties and you have at least $10,000. [$10,000 in 1901 is roughly the equivalent of $250,000 today.]

Take the present and the days of of open saloons and compare them, and you will find drunkenness now much greater than in the past. This paper is against liquor to be sold in any way, the only object in sending out this item is to let people see the way things are drifting.

An appropriately irreverent comment: The first thing that came to mind upon reading the foregoing was a quote attributed to any number of politicians. When asked how he stood on a particularly knotty issue, Mr. --------- replied, "Some of my friends be fer it, and some of my friends be agin it, and by-Gawd, I stand four-square with all my friends!" --

CHS students present Poetry Cafe'

CHS students present Poetry Cafe' By Calen McKinney

Campbellsville High School students are writing poetry and recently presented their poems to their classmates.

In Tyler Hardy’s freshman English classes, students are asked to write several types of poems, including slam poems, I Am poems, haikus and many more.

After their poems are finished, students present them in a Poetry Café setting. Hardy said the purpose of the project is for students to get to know each other through their poetry, which often evokes emotions such as love, hate, loneliness, fear and much more.

He told his students he hopes they learn they are all experiencing those emotions, and that helps them grow closer.
