BJ Hagy: Old military maps often handy finding older cemeteries

BJ HAGY writes:
Hey Ed - Perhaps someone with some military connection(s), such as US Army, Army Reserve, or National Guard can be contacted to see if they can get access to a military map that shows the area(s) around the county where this cemetery might have been. Older military maps especially will show where older cemeteries may have been. Not necessarily by the name of the cemetery but will show where one may be. It may be overgrown with undergrowth or well concealed by the woods. Just a thought. Good luck. - BJ HAGY

Brawner-Smith Cemetery is off Pelly Lane on Linda Taylor farm

Edwin Rogers writes:
The Brawner-Smith Cemetery is off Pelly Lane on the farm of Linda Taylor on a hilltop about 200 yards behind her house. It is in an open pasture field that at one time was fenced, but not now. The gravestones are turned over but many are still intact. On the list of interments there is no one by the name of Brawner.

I will email you some photos taken last summer at the site.

Darryl Smith finds list of those buried in Brawner-Smith

But he hasn't been able to locate the old Adair Cemetery

Darryl Smith writes:
Hi Ed! Your reader should look to Find a Grave for a list of the people interred at Brawner-Smith cemetery.

There are memorials for 44 people buried there. The most recent was in 1946, Maggie E. Campbell Williams.

My wife and I photographed over 100,000 grave markers in 7 nearby counties but we never located this cemetery. It's one of a few that eluded us but we're still looking as time permits. Hope this helps. --Darryl Smith

Carol Perkins: Let's go to town

Town was Edmonton, Kentucky. In the 50's the population was probably around twelve hundred people and it isn't much larger today. Sitting on a knob in South Central Kentucky with nothing but a flashing red light at the four way stop, Edmonton could hardly be called a place of excitement to outsiders, but it was home. It would be home to me except for my four years away during college.
Next previous column: Carol Perkins: The Christmas with the best present ever

By Carol Perkins

"Let's go to town," I would say to my dad from the backseat on our way home from my grandmother's when I was no more than seven or eight. It was less than a mile from our house so taking a short ride around the town square would take very little time.

He didn't ask me why I wanted to go to town, but rather than turn into our driveway, he continued up the hill and around the town square slowly, so I could absorb displays in the store windows and the streetlights glimmering against the black of the pavement. Then we went home.

Mayor Curtis Hardwick makes statement on lawsuit

'I believe the Board of Elections was correct to appeal, because there were mistakes made, but not enough to impact the outcome of the election.' - CURTIS HARDWICK

Curtis Hardwick

There's a lot of confusion going around about this lawsuit. It's not the City of Columbia's lawsuit. It's a suit against the Adair County Board of Elections concerning the mayoral election.

The city has not been accused of doing anything wrong, and I have not been accused of doing anything wrong.

Good jobs are back for college grads, says report

By Bob King, President, Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education
Personal commentary

Since the Great Recession, the national press has communicated the notion that a college degree is not worth the effort or expense, and that few jobs exist for those who pursue this fruitless but costly adventure. Story after story has perpetuated the myth of deeply indebted college graduates wasting away in dead-end jobs paying minimum wages and receiving no benefits. All good storytelling, these emotional, compelling, heartrending tales lead to the savory conclusion that colleges and universities are selling products no one really needs. But a new report developed by the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University clearly demonstrates that all these stories are just that--stories. While the anecdotes may have been true, the larger data paints a very different picture.

PAC says it now has nearly enough valid signatures

Where the Wet Petition stands: Progress in Adair County, PAC for short, needs just 1039 valid signatures to bring the question of the sale of alcoholic beverages in Adair County to the ballot, spokesperson Shannon Sexton says. Group has added extra hours, putting on drive to complete signature phase in January.
Comments on the issue of voting wet or remaining dry are welcome, but the tone must be that of civil discourse. To our knowledge, a group simiilar to PAC opposing legal sales has not been formed, but checks around the county finds spotty evidence that there is at least some opposition. - EW

CM Story based in large part on information from PAC

PAC spokesperson Shannon Sexton says the group is fast approaching the number of signatures they need - 1,039 based on 25% of the total vote in Adair County in the 2015 general election - to get the question on the ballot. However, she says. Volunteers the signatures have found that some of the signatures they have to date are invalid. The reasons are several:
