Remembering days when David Clift lived in Columbia

By Hunter Durham

David Clift and his family lived upstairs at Grissom Funeral Home. His dad was also a referee and one time my father and mother and Ms. Clift went to a Western Game where Charlie Clift was the referee.

A guy sitting behind Ms. Clift started fussing about the calls being made and Ms. Clift stood up and asked the man, "Do you see that referee?" The man let out some cuss words about him and Ms. Clift said, "That man is the only one I am pulling for, because he is my husband." The man said nothing else the rest of the game.

Remembering David Clift: He was born at Baute Infirmary, Lebanon, KY

Comments about: - David Lee Clift, 72, Columbia, KY native (1943-2015)

JIM writes:
The Clifts resided in Columbia, but David was born in Marion County, as evidenced by his birth certificate and by a brief announcement in the June 9, 1943 News: "Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Clift announce the arrival of a son, David Clift, on Sunday, June 6, at the Baute Infirmary, Lebanon. The young man is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Grissom.

In addition to his parents, David Lee was preceded in death by an infant younger brother, James Paul Clift, in 1944. With thanks as always for posting the obituaries, - jim
Thanks, Jim, for the information David's father, Charlie Clift, worked with his father-in-law, M.L. Grissom, in the funeral home. Charlie Clift was a basketball coach at Lindsey Wilson. The Clifts were very popular in Columbia. David Clift's grandmother, Rosa Grissom, doted on a little neighbor boy and was a inspiration for him to go into the only field of service he ever really considered, being a funeral director at Grissom's. The Clift family moved to Dyersburg, TN in 1950, when David Clift was only seven; what followed for him was a distinguished academic program and a very successful career and life. The late Grover Gilpin peppered his conversations with fond memories of the Clifts right up to his final years. - EW

The 25th Christmas in Columbia the Biggest and Best Ever

There were 74 entries and over 120 individual units that participated in the 2015 Christmas parade. - Brenda Mann

By Brenda Mann, President Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce

The Korean and Vietnam War Veterans paid the Columbia-Adair Chamber and the community a great honor serving as the Grand Marshals of this year’s parade. Thank you to Korean and Vietnam War veterans and all veterans who are serving, and have served to preserve our freedoms. Part of the tradition of Christmas in Columbia is to honor our community, and those in it that make selfless sacrifices to make life better for all, and who better to represent this 25th Christmas in Columbia tradition than our veterans. We owe you a debt that we can never repay, but please accept our humble appreciation for your service.
