The 25th Christmas in Columbia the Biggest and Best Ever

There were 74 entries and over 120 individual units that participated in the 2015 Christmas parade. - Brenda Mann

By Brenda Mann, President Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce

The Korean and Vietnam War Veterans paid the Columbia-Adair Chamber and the community a great honor serving as the Grand Marshals of this year’s parade. Thank you to Korean and Vietnam War veterans and all veterans who are serving, and have served to preserve our freedoms. Part of the tradition of Christmas in Columbia is to honor our community, and those in it that make selfless sacrifices to make life better for all, and who better to represent this 25th Christmas in Columbia tradition than our veterans. We owe you a debt that we can never repay, but please accept our humble appreciation for your service.

The Korean and Vietnam War Veteran Grand Marshals who participated in the parade are:
  • Korean Veterans- Earl Coffey, Lucian Edwards, Lewis Garrison, George Keltner, and Kenneth Scott
  • Vietnam Veterans – Donnie Bennett, Larry Burton, Neil Gold, R.T. Gossett, Orvis Grider, Joe Hare, Dick Scholl and Donald Ray White.
We also appreciation veterans Ronnie Holt, Jehovah Davis and Bill Hillock, members of the Columbia VFW Post who honored the Grand Marshals with the rendering of a proper military salute on the town square. This year’s Christmas in Columbia theme was “What Christmas Means to Me.” The 2015 float winners were:
  • Adair County Float Division – 1st Place Millerfield Brethren in Christ, 2nd Place Pickett/Tarter’s Chapel United Methodist, and 3rd Trinity United Methodist
  • Adair County Non- Float Division – 1st Place Preston Rowe, and 2nd Place Kathy Keith.
  • Out-of-Town Float Division – 1st Place Fry Baptist Church. Thank you to all the float participants for your hard work and expense in making this year’s floats the best ever. The floats, lights, children, and float occupants add such character and beauty to the parade. The float judges had a tough time deciding winners from this year’s many excellent entries.
We also appreciate all the other entries that make up the heart and soul of our community. It takes everyone to make this event successful and hats off to everyone who participated, volunteered or came out to this year’s biggest and best ever Christmas in Columbia event. We appreciate our local merchants and businesses, artisans and the arts and craft vendors who offer such unique items at the Historic Adair Courthouse and at the LWC Holloway Health and Wellness Center.

There were 74 entries and over 120 individual units that participated in the 2015 Christmas parade.

This the 5th year for the Children’s Carnival at the LWC Holloway Health and Wellness Center was, as always, a wonderful part of Christmas in Columbia. Abe Cross, Carnival chair, and all the students, staff and community vendors that made this event such a tremendous success for kids and adults.

The Chamber in partnership with the Adair Heritage Association added Christmas Card Village, a new and wonderful addition to Christmas in Columbia. The beautiful life size cards add beauty to downtown, and the card cutouts provide great props for children’s holiday pictures. Thanks to the many card creators, and to Ellen Zornes and Lee Ann Jessee for organizing and chairing this event, and also for hosting the arts and crafts vendors in the Historic Adair Courthouse.

A huge thank you to Debbie Selby and Roger Meadows for chairing Christmas in Columbia and to all the veterans, sponsors, Chamber members, spectators and community volunteers who helped make this 25th year small town tradition a success. Merry Christmas and best wishes for a happy, healthy, successful new year.

See CM Card of Thanks for list of commercial sponsors of this event Live through December 15, 2015.
