Harry Furkins: More memories of Breeding Grade School

Harry Furkins writes:
I'm sure both Roger and Donita are correct on their dates. Donita failed to mention Mrs. Ruth Thomas, 4th grade teacher. She was the first teacher I had at Breeding Grade School, when I came to Breeding in 1960.

For some information on Mrs. Hannie, she was hard of hearing.

Donita Hortillosa: BHS became a grade school

The visit to BHS ruins brought memories of it becoming a grade school before it was closed from former student Donita Hortillosa

Donita Hortillosawrites:
Linda, to answer your question about the old school at Breeding, it closed in the fall of 1963. It was no longer a high school at that time. I attended first and second grades there and we were first grade through eighth, with Mr. Bernie Paxton the principal. Some of the teachers I remember were Mrs. Sallie Akin, Mrs. Louise Gowen, Mrs. Edra Page and Mrs. Wolford. When I entered third grade, we moved to Sparksville Grade Center in the fall of 1963, so I believe I am correct that the last class to graduate from Breeding would have been an eighth grade class in the the spring of 1963. - Donita Hortillosa

Billy Joe Fudge: The day JFK was shot

The events of the day the news came over the P.A. speaker at Sparksville Elementary School after lunch, November 22, 1963, are as vivid as yesterday, for the writer. It was also the day of the death of innocent. What started out as a day of patriotic unity ended with a transition: That day my innocent, blind faith in the intrinsic goodness of humanity died, he writes.

By Billy Joe Fudge

My school moved from Breeding to Sparksville before November 22, 1963. I was in Mrs. Sally Akin's room when the announcement that JFK had been shot, came over the new P.A. I can never look at a wall-mounted P.A. speaker without a flashback to that day in infamy.

Charles Marshburn remembers That Tragic Day, 22 Nov 1963

Charles Marshburn writes:
I was a sophomore at the new University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. I had defeated my tennis instructor in a 2 out of 3 match for my tennis class only minutes before I heard the tragic news about JFK.

I was on top of the world and went straight to the university center building to brag to some friends about my accomplishment and ran into silence and tearful girls and somber faces. - Charles Marshburn

Phyllis Burris remembers where she was when JFK died

Tragedy occurred at 12:30pmCT, November 22, 1963
Do you remember where you were? Your comments are welcome. She had just made quite a change: Going from Breeding to Sparksville to the new consolidated grade center.

By Phyllis Burris

The Breeding Grade Center was moved to the Sparksville Grade Center during the 1963-64 school year. I was in the 6th grade and it was quite a change. There are lots of memories from both places.

We were already in the new school at Sparksville 52 years ago today, because I can remember where I was sitting in Mrs. Mary Wolford' s class when the announcement was made that President John F. Kennedy had been shot. - Phyllis Burris

Tom Chaney: Stories Rise Like Smoke

Of Writers And Their Books: Stories Rise Like Smoke. Tom waxes poetic about storytelling. This column first appeared 23 January 2011.
The next earlier Tom Chaney column: "I Don't Go To Church -- Kneeling Bags my Nylons"

Stories Rise Like Smoke

At the Bookstore's round table this morning
I stare at the drizzly rain
watching the fog
rising like smoke up the side of Gossett's Knob
drifting to meet the low clouds.

You'd think of fire
Then think of the cave
about half up the hill
in the low corner of an old rock quarry
But the mist goes up
further than the cave can deliver.
But the mist goes up
further than the cave can deliver.
