KY Afield Outdoors: Deer season off to hot start

Frankfort, KY - Cold air poured into Kentucky over the past weekend and dropped overnight low temperatures below freezing across much of the state.

The cool down didn't cool off the deer hunting. It's been hot since early September.

"Good numbers of deer across the state coupled with a cool and wet summer and sub-par mast production means we are ripe for some high harvest numbers," said Gabe Jenkins, deer and elk program coordinator with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

Play Saturday night highlights lives of two local women

Playwright Lanny Tucker invites the public to his historical play "Lizzie Mears - River of Dreams" Saturday night in Greensburg. The play highlights two women who operated a massive farm on Pittman Creek during the first half of the 20th century -- they are buried in the Columbia City Cemetery as shown in the photo. The second and last scheduled production begins at 6pmCT Saturday, October 24, 2015, in the Greensburg Community Center, 105 West Court Street. Admission is $5, students $2, with proceeds to the Green County Historical Society.

LWC Freshmen Class teams with Columbia UMC to make special day better

For the past three years the 2nd grade students at Adair County Primary Center have been treated to a special day compliments of the Freshman Class at Lindsey Wilson College. We have worked closely with Ben Martin and other advisers in the Freshman Year Experience (FYE) at the college to plan and keep the event a big surprise for our students up until the last minute.

City Council approves Gaddie-Shamrock paving bid

Road work approved for nine projects, which should be completed by Thanksgiving

The Columbia City Council, with Mayor Curtis Hardwick presiding in a special called meeting at 4:30pmCT, Thu 22 Oct 2015, approved the bid of Gaddie Shamrock, the only bid submitted, for $53,200 to pave the following streets:
  • Johnnie Street starting at Grady Street and going 562 feet to light pole.
  • Pickett Street starting at pole (26), 257 feet ending at Lee Street.
  • Lee Street starting at Pickett, 912 feet, stopping at Mack Street.
  • Willis Street starting at Hurt Street, 452 feet and ending at Harvey Street.
  • Baker Street 25 MPH sign, go 505 feet and end at Hudson Street.
  • E. Fraser Street start at pole number five, go 414 feet and end at pole number eight.
  • Church Street, start at patch at the top of the hill and go 523 feet, stop Burkesville Street.
  • Myrtle Street, start at new blacktop at light pole number 815 and go 348 feet, stop Curry's lot.
  • Denver Drive.
The bid was awarded immediately, on a motion by Council Member Ron Rogers, with a second by Mark Harris, with Members Linda Waggener, Craig Dean, and Charles Grimsley affirming for a 5-0 approval. Council Member Craig Lasley was not present.

James Carl Huber, 81, Casey County, KY (1934-2015)

He was retired from Boeing Aircraft. He was a Marine veteran. His wife, Lillian I. Stout Huber, survives. He leaves 35 direct living descendants

Elmer Beaty, Casey County, KY, Adair native (1932-2015)

He was a farmer and owner/operator of Beaty's Garage. He was a member of the Mannsville Christian Church. Elmer loved to sit on his front porch and he enjoyed going shopping at Wal-Mart. He was a former member of the Happy Gospel Singers and performed every Sunday on WKDO for over 40 years. His wife of 42 years, Ernestine "Tennie" Noe Beaty, survives. He was a native of Adair County, KY, and will be laid to rest in Barnett's Creek Cemetery.

COLUMBIA, KY - The "remarkable story called Lindsey Wilson College" was celebrated Wednesday afternoon.

The college - which is affiliated with the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church - held Church Celebration Day in V.P. Henry Auditorium, one of the oldest spaces on LWC's A.P. White Campus. The annual ceremony serves as a reminder of the college's connection to Methodism, which dates to LWC's founding in 1903.

Traffic Advisory: I65 NB work scheduled for Thu night, MP 58 in Hart Co.

Green River Bridge work on I65 is set for Thu 22 Oct 2015. This will require the northbound right lane to be closed beginning at 7pmCT. This closure will also close the northbound rest area at mile point 59 and northbound Exits 65, 71 and 76 due to the fact that all traffic will be routed into the left (inside) lane. The closure will last until approximately midnight. Although the lane closure will begin at 7pmCT, the rest area ramp to re-enter I65 will be closed at 8pmCT, allowing 1 hour to empty travelers out of the rest area.
