KY Afield Outdoors: 5 questions with Steve Beam

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - Steve Beam gained a foothold with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources more than two decades ago by working as a seasonal wildlife technician. In the years since, he climbed the departmental ladder and in May was appointed director of the Wildlife Division.

"I feel like I've hit every rung on the ladder," said Beam, who served as regional coordinator for the Southeast Wildlife Region before moving into his present role. "I think it gives me a unique perspective. When I look at the budget, I probably think about it a little different because I know what may look like a small thing in the overall budget is important to that person in the field who's trying to deliver habitat on the ground and provide service to hunters and to the public."

The 42-year-old, who is an avid deer and turkey hunter, recently sat down for an interview at Kentucky Fish and Wildlife headquarters in Frankfort. The following are excerpts from that interview.

I'm writing today to express my gratitude to our community for their support of our football program (and LWC athletics as a whole).

One of the questions we are asked quite often during the recruiting process revolves around how much the local community supports us.

This is an important factor for young people who are making a decision between many outstanding schools.

Max Wise: National Hunting, Fishing Day, 26 Sep 2015

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

In observance of this occasion, Governor Steve Beshear has proclaimed it to be Hunting and Fishing Day in Kentucky.

In celebrating this day, we recognize the time-honored traditions of hunting and angling, as well as the historical and current contributions of the original conservationists - hunters and anglers - in supporting sound, science-based fish and wildlife management.

With their education and years of experience dealing with youth and having to work under Kentucky Department of Education rules this group would be good for helping Columbia/Adair Co. improve in a lot of ways.

Thoughts on computers: Turn peripherals on, then computer

By Joyce Coomer

While turning on computers this morning, remembered something I was told when I first got a computer . . .

Turn on everything but the computer, then turn on the computer, as computers look to see what is attached to them and on as part of their "waking up" process. If a printer or scanner, etc., isn't on before the computer is turned on, it may not recognize it.

I have followed this advice for years and when I occasionally forget to turn on the scanner, the computer won't recognize it until I turn everything off and start over. This may be the cause of some people's printers not working, a complaint I hear quite frequently.

Carol Perkins: My grandmother and her sister Annie

'People in their communities gravitated toward my grandmother and her sister. I hope I can live my life as they did,' Carol Perkins writes as she looks back on wonderful memories of her grandmother Bettie Strange Reece. and her sister, Annie Strange Reece, memories of Adair County, and Metcalfe, and of Glasgow and Bowling Green times.
Next previous Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: On spending money

By Carol Perkins

I was driving down North Race Street headed toward the square and slowed in front of a familiar house. "You remember this house don't you?" I said to my mother. She immediately replied, "Yes, it was Aunt Annie's." My great aunt and uncle, Annie and Lenis Reece, lived in this white clapboard house with the half porch that wrapped around the side, and I spent many afternoons sitting in the swing while my grandmother visited her only sister. The house, the yard, and the street seemed much larger then.
