Columbia needs to be a more kid friendly town Comments re article 76673 BJF Why a fresh new start to reinvigorate Downtown is needed Pattie McClister writes: I am all for making our downtown beautiful but if we don't get some things here for our children people with families aren't coming here anyway. No pool, no theater, no skate parks. We need to invest some money toward raising kids in a kid friendly town then we can think about the square. - Pattie McClisterThanks, Pattie McClister - Thanks. But are these goals exclusive of each other? Couldn't Columbia have both? Some very valuable families have moved here precisely because the Square had so many kid friendly elements. - EW 2015-07-27 14:25:41 | Comments | Printable version

Tutman Road or Tupman Road? Either way it is a beauty Mini Album By Ed Waggener Yesterday, we completed, for me, Bucket List item No. Something - to get a picture of a sign which has been up for decades with what likely is a typo: Tutman Road on Highway 55 South Road, near the Zion Community. It's not an easy place to stop, but Sunday, July 27, 2015, we decided to pull in the little lane and get the photo. It felt intrusive to drive it. The cows didn't mind, but iit's like a private drive. The spelling is the official one, according to 911 Supervisor Jason Upchurch, and, he said, for .27 miles, it is a county maintained road. In all likelihood, the road was meant to honor the family which spells the name Tupman, with a "P," though there seems to be an equal division when the name is spoken, among those, who pronounce the name "Tut-man" and those who say "Tup-man." Along the way, simply trying to find a turnaround, we took a few photos, three of which are posted. - Ed & Linda 2015-07-27 10:55:15 | Comments | Printable version
Charles Marshburn speaks on: Has Columbia, KY regressed? About: Kathy Phelps Gaskins: Has the town regressed? Charles Marshburn writes That is the $64,000 question! No movie theater, no parking spaces for Canadian tour buses, no 5 and dimes, the best place to buy clothing is a Walmart or a yard sale, no Outback Steak House (Well, maybe that was a dream!). - Charles MarshburnThanks, Mr. Marshburn - But this is the first I'd heard about us wanting anything from Australia, not that anyone here is prejudiced against them because they talk funny, are silly from listening to opera, or because of their penchant for aggravating crocodiles. It's just that we've never seen an Australian tour bus anywhere in Kentucky. That's the bottom line. After alll, busses are the basic metric for Economic Development. 2015-07-27 09:24:34 | Comments | Printable version

Kathy Phelps Gaskins: Has the town regressed? Kathy Phelps Gaskin writes: Seems to me we, as a town, have regressed. There isn't a place to purchase nice clothing! Back in the day, we had The style Shop, The Men's Shop, Vaughn's Dress Shop, Loy's Department Store, Russell's Men's Wear, The Lions Den and Lany Bray, Ben Franklin, Nell's Variety Store, Hallmark, House of Styles, etc. How can people be expected to shop locally if the availability is. . . well, not available? Just my opinion! --Kathy Phelps GaskinComments re article 76673 BJF Why a fresh new start to reinvigorate Downtown is needed 2015-07-27 08:29:08 | Comments | Printable version
