Where in the World??? 31 May 2015: Old sign a clue

2015-05-31 - ?????? - Photo by Ed & Linda Waggener. The building this sign is on caught our eye, and the mystery of the story behind the doubly or triply used sign made us want to know what enterprises were conducted here, and when. The sign is at a location in the 7-County CM area: Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties. Tell us the road and general location, and as much as you can about the businesses which used this sign, and any details about the very interesting old run of shops. Reply using the Comments button with the photo, which was taken within the last week. - LINDA & ED

Lorne Holler, from Florida, agrees with B. Armitage

Thinks out-of-towners would be lost following detour signs

Lorne Holler writes:
Barbara, you're not the only one from Florida. We are from Tampa Bay Area been here for 8 years on June 1. I have seen detour signs on the bypass, and some scattered around town. If I was a tourist and followed some of them, I would be lost. I'm fortunate enough to know short cuts through the city and to get around the construction. The detours should be marked thoroughly so people can get in and around the site quickly and on their way to their destination. - Lorne Holler

The construction interruption: What isn't marked is the detour

She says: I'm from Florida, a place where nobody is "from around here". In fact I'm pretty sure that there's a state law that says no more than 12 actual Floridians can live in the state at any given time - there just isn't room for them. The number one industry in Florida is "people who aren't from around here", we call them tourists. It's a 67 billion dollar a year industry. I'd say that the road department in Florida could be called an expert in getting these people (tourists) where they need to go under any conditions. They might be someone we want to emulate.

By Barbara Armitage
Personal commentary

I think it's great that we're having some much needed work done on the culverts at the corner of Hwy 55 and Hwy 206. It's important to have good roads and I'm quite sure that the work is progressing just as quickly as it possibly can. That said, I think we need to have a talk about the detours - or lack thereof.

Letter: Writer cites a pattern in gas pricing

Lois Cunningham writes:
Ed, haven't we all in Adair County noticed that our gas goes up an average 20 cents every Friday and comes back down on Monday. Only one gas station, under different ownership, doesn't do that. We are trapped in a monopoly. I wish that everyone would fill up on Thursday or Tuesday and avoid buying local gas on other days. That is, if you want to support "local." If not, buy gas somewhere else. Maybe the monopoly would lose some of its clout. - Lois Cunningham

Where in the World?? Latest is from Old Creelsboro, KY

Next previous Where in the World: Where in the World 26 May 2015 - Angel in Columbia Cemetery

by Linda & Ed Waggener

Photographer Junior Stotts photographed a scene in Old Creelsboro, Russell County, KY, just a day ago with a setting which gave the photo a look of a half century or more ago, and sent it as a travel item.

Though we've seen it dozens of times, we still didn't recognize it. But The angle and the perspective wasn't enough to mask its identity from the ghost town's many fans.

The photo was posted at just around 1pmCT, and it didn't take but a few minutes for the answers to come pouring in, listed below, all received on Sat 30 May, 2015:
  1. Mary Ann Brown wrote first with the correct answer, at 1:27pmCT, "Creelsboro, in Russell County, KY."
  2. Robert Cumming wrote at 1:30pmCT, "This former shop building is located on Ky 389, in the center of Creelsboro, Russell County, Ky."
  3. Tommy Corbin wrote at 2:08pmCT, "Looks like O.G. Rowe's store at Chance." and 'deed it does look somewhat like the photo, but that wasn't it,; the photo was taken in Creelsboro.
  4. Paul Patton wrote at 2:28pmCT, "The building pictured was in Creelsboro; however, I do not know for sure what the building was used for nor by whom."
  5. Elvis E. York wrote at 5:38pmCT, "I believe this old store building is located in the old town of Creelsboro, Ky."
  6. John E. Moss wrote at 10:40pmCT, "... old store front @ Creelsboro, Russell County, Kentucky." He didn't say, but we'd guess that it's been the subject of one of his many outstanding photographs of Russell County landmarks.
  7. Fred W. Carnes wrote at 5:09pmCT, Sun 31 May 2015: "The building is in Creelsboro, KY."
  8. Robert W Cummin wrote at 8:48pmCT, Sun 31, 2015: "The former shop in the photo was a combination farm implement-hardware business previously operated by Barry Buster until the late forties, early fifties. The property was later acquired by the Gilbert family and lately their heirs."
Thanks to everyone who participated, and to Mr. Stotts for submitting the photo. The puzzles. If you know the whole story about the landmark, we'd sure appreciate hearing from you.

I had just left Campbellsville and paid less than $2.55 for the same gas, drove straight to Columbia. - MIKE ELLIS

Field Day at Homeplace on Green River

May field day at Homeplace helps foster learning about healthy soils and the benefits of Soil Health Cover Crops.

By Billy Joe Fudge, vice-president, Homeplace on Green River, and retired district forester, Kentucky Division of Forestry

A group of farm producers and conservation professionals joined representatives of Homeplace on Green River at the Taylor County historic farm in late May to learn more about what makes up a healthy soil system. Participants learned how to preserve and even improve our priceless soils, increase farm productivity, and protect the natural world at the same time. The meeting was a cooperative effort between the Homeplace on Green River, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS).

Lost in Columbia: There's help all around

Coping with construction. These are interesting times. Everyone has an anecdote about Armored truck, headed for Campbellsville, ends up in Vester, but friendly natives get them pointed in the right direction.

There are a lot of people getting lost in Columbia with the construction disruption at the Fairgrounds Street at Campbellsville Street intersection. Sometimes twists and turns in the detour have people ending up in odd places, as Patty Smith at Liberty Road Grocery & Deli in Vester, found after the detour was set up Wednesday morning, May 27, 2015.

An armored truck drove up, she said, and a guard came in, saying he'd just come from Columbia and needed directions to Campbellsville.

Tom Chaney: Heat Lightning

Of Writers And Their Books: Heat Lightning. Tom says that Blum's account of the blast, the causes, the search for the guilty, and the trials is of that genre Blum calls "journalistic history" which seems to mean that he offers no careful documentation. This column first appeared 30 May 2010.

Heat Lightning

Early in the morning of October 1, 1910, an explosion destroyed the building of the Los Angeles Times. Twenty-one people were killed. At first the blast was attributed to a careless match igniting a gas leak. Soon it became clear that a bomber had been at work.

Howard Blum, a contributing editor to Vanity Fair, without a blush stretches this event into what some yellow journalists of the time labeled it: "The Crime of the Century." This name was given before Lee Harvey Oswald, the Mansons, the Watergate gang, Hitler, and James Earl Ray; and with only ninety years to go in the century. And I don't recall such 21st century appellations given to the West Virginia mine disaster or the current British Petroleum debacle off the oily coast of Louisiana.

By Wanda Washington, Greater Campbellsville United

Greater Campbellsville United received a grant from the Kentucky Historical Society to transcribe 15 previously recorded oral interviews in the African American Heritage of Columbia/Adair County Oral History Collection at the Kentucky Oral History Commission.

These compelling interviews, recorded in 2013-2014, tell about African American life in Adair County, where businesses, homes, communities, and schools were located and how they changed over time, their life experiences, Civil Rights activities, segregation and integration.

These transcripts will be used to prepare a manuscript that will document their heritage for future generations and may be used to develop an African American Driving Tour Brochure of Adair County
