Billy Joe Fudge: Is Columbia mayorless? And other questions

Writer wonders, for one thing, if Columbia is Mayorless right now. He cites many more questions, perhaps others have other questions.

By Billy Joe Fudge
Personal commentary

Well, looks like we are going to have another Mayoral election. In a representative democracy, the will of the people must be the ultimate consideration and after reading Judge Vance's "findings of fact", "conclusions of law" and declaration voiding the Mayoral election; it seems as if that consideration has reigned supreme.

Might I say that I certainly hope all those deficiencies in our Adair County Court Clerk's office have been brought up to standard. Even when things are running along smoothly, government employees often serve a thankless public and their own reputations are many times called into question because of the subpar performance of others. I can imagine that this process has been somewhat less than pleasant for all concerned.

Jon Halsey: On magazine's service to community

Comments re article 74640 Roy Rademacher has question on Judge Vance ruling

By Jon Halsey
Once again CM has proven to be a service of inestimable value to the community-at-large.

Not only the timely, as of the moment reporting but also providing the ability for citizens to voice their comments, doubts, fears, hopes and aspirations embody the highest journalistic standards.

Would that the Main Stream Media still adhere to those time honored standards. Even handed reportage of both current and past events seems to be outmoded, out-of-date and out-of-style.

I've said it before, privately and publicly, but it bears repeating: "Thank you, CM." - Jon Halsey
Thanks! Jon Halsey: You do not know how much we appreciate your comments. Thanks for setting the bar high. I hope we can live up to your expectations. Really, though, if the magazine is perceived as you see it, it is because of participation by you and other valued contributors. - EW

Comments re article 74637 Judge Vance voids city election orders County Clerk to hold new one

Roy Rademacher writes:
Is not the city council involved in the election too? - Roy Rademacher
The ruling only pertains to the contested election for Mayor, which had a special set of circumstances, with only a few, more minor issues common to the races for City Council. That is how we read it. You're encouraged to read the entire ruling which can be accessed at Read the court's entire decision: Arnold et al vs Adair County Board of Elections et al (PDF)

Mark Hale comments on paying fire dues with tax bill

Mark Hale writes:
I would not have a problem paying a fee with the taxes, however I believe that if it were imposed the local fire departments would bare a larger responsibility than they already have. If you force someone to pay fire dues you better be ready to save their home should it catch on fire. I believe it would invite lawsuits as now we have a volunteer fire department and we have volunteer dues. Make it mandatory and you'll need a full-time staff at the department 24/7/365. Do we want to pay for that? I think we would be better off to leave it the way it is and maybe have an awareness campaign to help encourage folks to pay their dues. Thanks to all of our fire fighters we appreciate every one of you. - Mark Hale

Jon Halsey comments on proposed fire dues ordinance

Jon Halsey writes:
My understanding was that the "legality" of the mandatory fire fee rests on the difference between "Legality" and "Mandatory." Sort of a "Depends on what the meaning of 'is' is." I've been told that while one does not face a fine or jail time for not paying the fire fee, they do face a hefty charge if the fire department is called to their property and they have not paid the annual dues. I believe the charge is substantially more than a lifetime of annual dues and that cost is not covered by most Insurance plans.

Of course that is not an issue for those who choose to be responsible citizens and recognize that we all have certain obligations to the community where we elect to reside.

An additional thought is that if everyone paid their annual dues, the probable reduced ISO rating and consequent Insurance Rates would more than offset the dues. --Jon Halsey

Schools have one level above Mr. Steve and God

At the Adair County School Board Meeting, 16 Apr 2015

Superintendent Alan Reed read a story from Adair County Elementary School which occurred on Tuesday, April 14, 2017, as flood waters were rising across roads, resulting, later, in schools being dismissed at 11:30amCT:
As it is raining again pretty hard outside, Kelsi W. just asked me if we are going to cancel school today.

I said, "I don't know Kels, but I hope we get to stay all day. Do you know who makes that decision?"

She grinned, "Mr. Steve does."

I replied, "No, someone above him". Her eyes lit up, "God".

I laughed and shared that God does make the rain but Mr. Reed, Mrs. Reed's husband and our superintendent, makes that call!

Have a great, rainy day!
Thanks to Sandy Wilson, Assistant (to "Mr. Steve," Steve Burton) Principal at Adair County Elementary School for the story.
