Billy Joe Fudge: Is Columbia mayorless? And other questions

Writer wonders, for one thing, if Columbia is Mayorless right now. He cites many more questions, perhaps others have other questions.

By Billy Joe Fudge
Personal commentary

Well, looks like we are going to have another Mayoral election. In a representative democracy, the will of the people must be the ultimate consideration and after reading Judge Vance's "findings of fact", "conclusions of law" and declaration voiding the Mayoral election; it seems as if that consideration has reigned supreme.

Might I say that I certainly hope all those deficiencies in our Adair County Court Clerk's office have been brought up to standard. Even when things are running along smoothly, government employees often serve a thankless public and their own reputations are many times called into question because of the subpar performance of others. I can imagine that this process has been somewhat less than pleasant for all concerned.

So now, picture if you will, me setting in front of my computer in the pose of The Thinker. Please be advised that unlike The Thinker, I am fully clothed. At any rate, I'm still caught in the same "space--time continuum" of unanswered questions in which I found myself prior to Judge Vance's ruling. For instance:
  • If the election, in effect, did not happen, is Columbia Mayorless at this point?
  • If Curtis is no longer Mayor, who assumes that role in the interim?
  • If no one automatically assumes the role of Mayor, does someone appoint one?
  • If one has to be appointed who does the appointing?
  • Are there any guidelines for timeframes for setting the date for a new election?
  • Are the three candidates on the ballot for Mayor the only candidates allowed to compete in the new election?
In light of all the unknowns, I thoroughly expect to see an Alexander Haig come rushing into a press briefing early Monday morning declaring, "I'm in control here". Sorry, I just could not help myself.

Laying all the joking aside, even though there are many unanswered questions, at least now we can clean up our plates, get up from the table and go to work. Of this I'm sure, we are all thankful.
