PARK AND PRAY: A Call for Community Prayer

Submitted by FM 92.7 the WAVE

It is time for residents of Columbia and Adair County along with concerned neighbors and friends to come together for prayer. There has been a great deal of concern raised about the safety of some of our local roadways.

A Community Prayer is planned on the Columbia By-Pass from Highway 55 North to Highway 55 South. Park anywhere along the Columbia Bypass on April 10, 2015 at 5pmCT for fifteen minutes of united prayer.

Participants may park anywhere along the Columbia Bypass for prayer. There will not be a central location or program. Everyone is encouraged to be extremely mindful of safety by turning on vehicle flashers and pulling completely off of the highway. We do not want to seek to help a situation and create a danger for any person or motorist.

Because PARK AND PRAY participants will not be together in a central location, 92.7 The Wave Radio along with WAIN FM 93.5 will assist in the beginning and ending of the prayer time. Participants may tune in to either station for information and encouragement.

The goal is to have the entire length of the Columbia By-Pass bathed in prayer. Those who cannot attend may join in prayer by tuning into 92.7 The Wave Radio and praying with those who are on location.

Chris Oliver: Leave No Doubt With The Solution

He makes the case for a roundabout, a physical barrier which will leave no doubt

By Chris Oliver
Personal commentary

There has been a lot of good discussion on your site about the intersection and how to fix the issue. I find myself agreeing with many of the aforementioned problems (distracted driving of various manners, differing speed limits, etc.), as well many of the proposed solutions.

What we know for sure is that there is one intersection in this county that has consistently been the location of dangerous high speed accidents, and the number of incidents has not improved (thankfully, the intersection with Greensburg Street does seem to have improved).

People driving on a 'bypass' don't expect stops

'Our local residents have become morbidly aware of how dangerous the bypass has become, but those passing through from other areas to tend to forget or don't realize that there are stop lights in place,' - CYNTHIA MEYER

By Cynthia A Meyer

How many of the wrecks and mishaps involved drivers not from this area? Not that out of towners are the only problem, but once you start driving on the bypass, it is seems like a fast tract on the way to where you are going.

Folks forget they are not driving on the parkway especially if they are not from this area.

Wonderful memories of Ruel & Runa Wooten

He remembers their stores, fishing on their boats, and a wonderful little parakeet named Dickie. 'Nowadays, Dennis Wooten, says, "we could use a few more peope in this world like them."

By Dennis Harvey

I have very happy wonderful memories of Ruel Wooten. The Wootens were my great uncle and aunt. Runa (Runie) was my mom's mom's youngest sister (my great aunt).

Ruel and Runa very hard working people in Columbia and very prominent business people. They founded the Circle R (hence, the "R" for Ruel and Runa) in addition to the department store.

They were both very active in the community.

Ralph Waggener: A little common sense, not money, needed on the bypass

By Ralph Roy Waggener
Personal commentary by the publisher of It's Just for a Smile News

On the Bypass problems, if I'm reading right most of the wrecks have been caused by drivers not familiar with the Bypass.

Make money making fines to stop this problem has a bad smell to it.

Increase the markings that a stop light is ahead. Use Flashing amber light or 2 light alternately flashing. Add a second pair of lights at a second distance and rumble strips if necessary.

You can't legislate that drivers to be aware of what they are doing.

Gerald Doss: Raise the fine, lower the speed limit

Gerald Doss writes:
I would agree with Billy Joe Fudge that reducing speed would at least reduce severity of crashes when they do happen. Plus might reduce numbers of crashes. There is no particular distraction to cause crashes at this intersection. More speed and inattention are the biggest factors. Raise the fine, lower the speed limit, and enforce it strictly. We are killing off our people. Make the fine $500 for texting and talking on phone. - Gerald Doss

John Campbell: Signage, reducing speed differential needed

Joins in call for low cost, elegant solution: Also says innovative signals suggested by Billy Joe Fudge would help, and strict enforcement- with no favoritism - of speed limit, with no tolerance and he says, WORD WILL GET IT - DON'T SPEED INATTENTIVELY THRU COLUMBIA'S BYPASS.
Click on headline for complete commentary

By John Campbell

First, I offer my condolences and prayers to victims and their families which have been involved in any mishap on the bypass.

After reading and hearing comments/thoughts concerning possible solutions to the high rate of crashes and near misses on the Columbia bypass, I come to two or three different conclusions. 1. Something needs to be done. 2. Contributing factors may include speed, distractions, and design. 3. Neither of the state, county, or city want to spend a lot of money.
