COLUMBIA, KY - Lindsey Wilson College has expanded its efforts to meet working adults' educational needs by launching Lindsey Online.

Lindsey Online features three bachelor of arts programs and two graduate programs offered completely online: bachelor's degrees in criminal justice, business administration and nursing; and master's degrees in interactive design and education.

"This will make a Lindsey Wilson education possible for more students in Kentucky and nationwide, even worldwide," said LWC Director of Online Education Dennis Robinson.

All Lindsey Online classes are led by an LWC faculty member and they are offered in an accelerated, eight-week format, Robinson said. Full-time Lindsey Online students will take two classes at a time, which will allow them to complete four classes per semester.

"Typically a person who takes online courses is looking for a convenient option for either starting a new degree or completing a degree they didn't finish," Robinson said. "They're typically adults with families who are also working full-time, so this format makes it possible for them to get their degree when it's convenient for them to do the classwork -- and they don't have to travel."

KCTCS graduates should find program especially appealing

Robinson said Kentucky Community and Technical College System graduates should find Lindsey Online especially appealing.

"Kentucky has a lot of KCTCS students who 'go out of state' online to finish their bachelor's degrees because there aren't enough online programs in Kentucky," he said. "Lindsey Online is heavily geared toward those students. We hope to help many of them finish their bachelor's degrees."

Although Lindsey Online classes may be taken in a solitary environment, Robinson said "a good online program also builds community."

"A good online course builds in a lot of communication, both with the faculty member and the other students -- that's key to having a successful online program," he said.

Robinson -- who has more than two decades of experience in online education -- came to Lindsey Wilson last year to create an online program that would build on the college's more than 25 years of serving non-traditional students.

Lindsey Wilson Online builds on solid academic program on A.P. White Campus

He said one of the reasons Lindsey Online is such a strong program is because it builds on solid academic programs offered at Lindsey Wilson's A.P. White Campus in Columbia.

"Lindsey Online is a strong program because our college's 'on-ground' programs are strong," Robinson said. "These online programs are taught by many of the same faculty who teach the programs on the A.P. White Campus. It's the same Lindsey Wilson faculty and the same curriculum. The only difference is that the online programs were developed to be taught online for those folks who can't make it to the A.P. White Campus."

Lindsey Wilson pioneered college programs in Southcentral Kentucky to help nontraditional students. The college started an evening college program in the late 1980s; in 1992 it opened a campus in Scottsville, Ky., aimed at working adults; and in 2003 it began a partnership with community colleges in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia that allows area residents to earn a bachelor's and master's degree without leaving their communities.

"Lindsey Wilson has a rich heritage and a proven track record of working with adult learners, so creating Lindsey Online was a natural extension for this college," Robinson said. "Lindsey Wilson understands non-traditional students, and that's what makes Lindsey Online such an exciting addition to this college's academic programs."
