Freshet at Plum Point was portent of Great Flood of 1913

Nationwide the Great Flood of 1913 took over 650 lives. That flood still stands as Ohio's largest weather disaster

By Robert Cumming

The "freshet" mentioned taking out the Plum Point bridge the first week of January 1913 was a portent of the great calamity occurring two and a half months later in March throughout the Midwest.

The Great Flood of 1913 occurred between March 23 and March 26, after major rivers in the central and eastern United States flooded from runoff and several days of heavy rain.

Happy Tail: Black Dogs

Black Dog Syndrome. What is that you ask? Black Dog Syndrome is defined by Wikipedia as the low adoption and high euthanasia rate of black dogs in shelters. Black dogs are often the last to be adopted from shelter. It shouldn't be, Peg Schaeffer says. Somehow the public's attitude must be changed, she says.

In November, 2008 I was at the shelter and there was a black Labrador Retriever with 3 puppies. She had had a litter of 8 puppies and they were dying one at a time. The 3 at her side were the only ones left. So I took her and the 3 survivors home. Unfortunately 1 more died but I was able to save 2. When they were old enough I adopted them to good homes.

Bryant Stockton: Super Blues and Mod Hippie Fests

Now a teacher at Metcalfe County, but originally from Albany, KY, with ties in Cumberland County, and 'discovered for CM by Carol Perkins, his muse

Stop me if you've heard this one before: a guy walks onto the set of a sports talk show. He has a football under one arm and a box full of cliches under the other. He and a group of "experts" (former players, coaches, random analysts of all kinds) debate as to what will happen when boot is finally put to pigskin on Sunday. They debate...and they debate...and they debate. Day after bloody, mind-numbing day. That's just one TV show on one of myriad networks---and that's just TV. What about radio, podcasts, Twitter, newspapers, barber shops, bars, living rooms, the surface of the moon, man caves? This Super Bowl "analysis" has given me the Super Bowl Blues - the Superblues.

Billy Joe Fudge: The difference between freshet and flood

JIM's treatise on the Early 20th Century Bridge-Building Boom, and the inclusion of the word 'freshet' inspires this essay from the Great Wooded South University's Linguistics Department on the distinction between the two words
Comments re article 72881 The Saga of the Plum Point Bridge (1900-1914)

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

Well now, one never knows from whence one's "learning gene" may be titillated. In this case it was the word, "freshet."

In all my years of study in the Great Wooded South University's Linguistics Department, "freshet" had never popped up on my or the Department's radar screen. So all those with PHD's from GWSU were contacted to correct this deficiency by which we were blindsided.

CU professor Twyla Hernandez published

By Zatoria Leavell, CU writer

"Why do many Bible-believing Christians often criticize the poor more readily, using the opportunities presented to them as a means to share the gospel in word and deed?"

That is the question that Twyla K. Hernandez, assistant professor of Christian Missions in Campbellsville University's School of Theology, looks into in her article "The War that Cannot Be Won? Poverty: What the Bible Says," published in the Journal for Baptist Theology and Ministry.

The Saga of the Plum Point Bridge 1900-1914

Herein follows some epic moments and turns of fortunes in Adair County Travel History. The story tells how Plum Point won out over Neatsville for a bridge across Green River. It recalls the disaster of 1913, "The Great Freshet," possibly the worst flooding since 1907. It tells of the building of the Milltown Bridge over Russell Creek, another on Stanford Road, and yet another over Russell Creek on Somerset Road - in all, six Adair County Bridges by Champion Bridge Company, in an almost frenzied bridge building program not exceeded until the administration of Judge Ann Melton when 20 bridges were build in eight years.
Inspiration for this article for came from the photo and drawing of Plum Point Bridge (Where Plum Point Bridge was but isn't anymore and Scenic Adair Co., KY: Beautiful drawing of old Plum Point Bridge) on ColumbiaMagazine. - JIM

"These bridges are very much needed and we trust the county will do its part toward building them."--Adair County News, January, 1900. The entire Green River section of Adair County buzzed with excitement one hundred fifteen years ago. After decades of inertia, the Fiscal Court, finally with a pro-bridge majority, voted to have a bridge erected across the river. Toward that end, the Court invited Mr. Harlow H. Spain, traveling representative of the Champion Bridge Company of Wilmington, Ohio, to estimate the cost of two bridges--one across Green River either at Plum Point or Old Neatsville, the other across Russell's Creek at Milltown.

Mr. Spain arrived in the county near the end of January 1900. Reported the News soon thereafter, "In company with Judge J.W. Butler and County Attorney Jas. Garnett, Jr., all the points were visited, but no definite conclusion was reached as to cost, as the calculations will have to be made at the manufactory. Enough, however, was learned that a bridge at Old Neatsville could be built for about $1,000 cheaper that at Plum Point."

By Robert Stone

Rev. Robert J. Stout, author of the Another Angle columns which appeared on Columbia Magazine a few year back, died on Sunday, January 25, 2015. He was pastor of United Methodist churches in both Liberty and Centertown, Kentucky, and had previously been pastor at Mt. Holly UMC in Fairdale (Louisville), at Horse Cave UMC, Kentucky, and in Maryland.

Another Angle first appeared January 16, 2005 and concluded on February 4, 2007. Sandra T. Wilson, editor of The Sunday News-Herald (Hart County) invited him to write a column. Because of diabetic complications, Rob had eight hospital stays and thirteen surgeries. His writing appeared under the byline The Rev. Joey N. Welsh, whose letters rearranged spell John Wesley, because Methodists suggest that ministers not maintain close ties with their previous churches. Rob had been at Horse Cave United Methodist Church for several years and was at Mt. Holly, Fairdale, Kentucky, when he started writing.

Carol Perkins: My travel group

"Just last week one of the group called. She had been surfing the web, looking for an affordable cruise for this spring. The idea was to avoid families and spring break cruisers. We are a bit persnickety, but with age that is allowed. When she called me, the conversation went something like this: 'Carol, I've found a cruise that leaves March 28th out of Miami. It is a good price with balcony rooms. What do you think?' " - CAROL PERKINS

As you know from other articles, I have a group of friends with whom I travel. The group changes sometimes because of obligations, but usually as few as six or as many as ten go somewhere each summer. Usually the choice will be either to the beach trip or on a cruise. Either trip requires little effort and vast opportunity to do nothing. We like both.
