CAUD board report, regular 15 Jan 2015 meeting report

  • CAUD approves CJE's request for $50,000 sewer project at GRAS animal shelter
  • Board hears news that water rate increase might necessary to fix low pressure problem Flatwoods, KY 768 and KY 704 area; delay affects some 600 customers
  • Burkesville Street/Pike water line contract rescinded. May be rebid.
  • Merger paper work completed Tue 20 Jan 2015

By Ed Waggener

The Columbia/Adair County Utilities board nixed, for the time being, two major projects at its regular Thu 15 Jan 2015 meeting but added a small one.

The CAUD board, meeting for the first time with new member Larry Russell Bryant, rescinded a contract with Stotts Construction Company to replace water lines from the Columbia United Methodist Church to The Pike area of Burkesville Street, and also put off action on new 6" or 8" waterlines for the South End of the County, in the Flatwoods, much of Sparksville Road, and a stretch of KY 704 which has been plagued by low water pressure.

But the board did vote, unanimously, on a motion by David Jones, with a second by Tim Baker, to take sewer service to the Green River Animal Shelter at a cost of $50,000.

JIM: School attendance was at 56.4% in 1910

By JIM

According to a 1910 census bulletin released some years afterward (late 1914 or early 1915), the school attendance in Adair County, by age group, was as follows:
  • Ages 6 to 9: 1,013 of 1,700 (59.6%)
  • Ages 10 to 14: 1,423 of 1,940 (73.4%)
  • Ages 15 to 17: 558 of 1.062 (52.5%)
  • Ages 18 to 20: 221 of 995 (22.2%)
  • Total, all ages: 3,215 of 5,697 (56.4%)
In 1910, compulsory school attendance laws in Kentucky still were a couple of years in the future. Nearly every one of the 221 students in the 18 to 20 age bracket was attending common school, as the Columbia Graded School had opened just the previous fall and the high school division, not accredited until the fall of 1910, had only about half a dozen enrollees during the 1909-10 school year. - JIM

E/MC chamber still has plentiful supply of free Metcalfe Co. maps

The Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce Office has been informed that once again an out-of-town map company is selling advertising for a Metcalfe County Map. The local chamber is not endorsing this project. The local office has a plentiful supply of Free Metcalfe County Maps to distribute to those who need them. When this supply runs low, someone from the Chamber Office will contact local businesses about a low cost ad on the map. - Gaye Shaw, Executive Director, Edmonton/Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce
