Personal Commentary

By Ralph R Waggener
Responding to Ben Arnold's Let's expect our youth to run, not crawl

Ben, I would challenge you to work to bring high paying jobs to Columbia/Adair County. You have the smarts to do this.

What I'm saying is that we have more people who need jobs here who can't qualify for the $100+ thousand per jobs then those few who are.

Gerald Doss: What do non-city residents get for Payroll Tax?

Gerald Doss writes:
My message is short, but not very sweet: What exactly do those of us who live in the county and work in town get for this stupid tax? Is it 12-15 policemen in town for our protection. I hardly ever see a police officer, except one driving by in a high powered gas guzzler. I can't think of any other benefit. - Gerald Doss
Thanks, Gerald Doss, for your comment: There are a zillion things Columbia offers, a little bit of which the City affords everyone, including in-commuters from the hinterland. Surely the culture and enlightenment, alone, would be worth the paltry additional tax. As for the police, would you put them on foot or on a bicycle in this day and age? Just asking. Surely not. - EW

Ben Arnold: Let's expect our youth to run, not crawl

Ben Arnold replies to Ralph Waggener letter:
Ralph Roy, My friend, the 50s are gone. Check the labor statistics for Kentucky and see if you can find any $8 or $10/hr jobs? I found one for car washers at $10.30/hr. I don't want us to accept or plan for our young people to crawl, let's expect them to run, and let's use our money to assist them?
No? Many of our most successful people don't have advanced degrees; success is available in many ways. I know you are agreeing with many of my comments, just want the Community to continue thinking about these things. --Ben Arnold
