Economic Development Authority will NOT meet May 20, 2014

The Economic Development Authority, Inc. will NOT meet Tuesday, May 20, 2014. Due to conflicts with board members schedules, there will not be a quorum present and no business can be conducted. Therefore the May meeting is cancelled.

The board regularly meets at 8amCT, the third Tuesday in each month at the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce Building, 201 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY. - Sue Stivers, Executive Director, Economic Development Authority, Inc.

Mrs. Claudette Smith, Burkesville, KY (1949-2014)

She was a member of the Judio Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was a native of Cumberland County, KY, and a resident at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Claude and Grace Adams Brewington. Her hasband, Lloyd Smith, survives. She leaves 3 direct living descendants.

Mrs. Claudette Smith, age 65, of Burkesville, Kentucky passed away on Monday, May 12, 2014 at the Cumberland County Hospital in Burkesville, Kentucky.

Funeral Services were conducted on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 in the Memory Chapel of Norris-New Funeral Home, 601 N Main Street, Burkesville, KY, with Bro. Raymond Castillo officiating. Special singing and music was provided by Will Scott and Creed Scott. Burial was in the Dodson Cemetery in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Casket Bearers were Will Scott, Justin Harper, Tyler Smith, Jim Daniels, Jason Brewington, Alex Killman and Charles Scott. Honorary Casket Bearer was Dr. Jerry Bean.

Mayor Harris says the Fountain will be fixed Monday

Mayor Mark Harris has been to the Farmers Market on the Square this morning and called to say he has two items on his agenda to help the market. First, he said, he's arranged, as Mayor, for Donnie Rowe to get the Fountain ready for the summer. Work will begin on Monday, he said.

He said with the Fountain area made more attractive more people would be coming to the market. "And it's busy down here, today," he said.

And then, he said that as County Court Clerk, he looking at rescheduling the office hours to see if it will be feasible to open on Saturdays and to see how different hours might help the Farmers Market.

Candidates coming to the Farmers Market on the Square

Here's the list, as known of the candidates coming to the Saturday, May 17, 2014 Farmers Market on the Square, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY sometime during the 8am-1pmCT session:
  • Matt Bevin candidate for US Senator, and his wife and 9 children are scheduled to be here at 12:15pmCT
  • Sara Beth Gregory, candidate for the Kentucky State Senate, District 16, plans to be present, but campaign staffer Travis Burton will be sometime during the morning
  • Mike Sneed, candidate for Adair County Court Clerk, was at the market before 8amCT. And he writes that, if elected, he'll have the clerk's office on Saturday, and that it's his aim for coffee to be served in the office for patrons.
  • Mark Harris, also a candidate for Adair County Court Clerk, plans to be at the market after 9amCT.
  • Joey White, candidate for jailer, Adair County Jailer was at the market early
  • Mark Selby, candidate for Adair County Jailer, was next
  • Travis Burton, representing Sara Beth Gregory, was making a visit at a little after 9amCT, and said that Sara Beth would be at the market later in the day.
  • Brenda Mann, candidate for Adair County Court Clerk, called to say she will be at the market shortly after 10amCT.

Sara Beth Gregory will have representive at FM2

Sara Beth Gregory, candidate for re-election as Kentucky State Senator, District 16 (Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, Russell, Taylor and Wayne and McCreary Counties) wrote that she'll have a campaign presence in Columbia today, with the hope she'll be by the Farmers Market on the Square and that Travis Burton, campaign staffer, is planning to definitely be there. She will be campaigning in Adair County today, and will be checking on new local progress on the Fairground Street/Campbellsville Intersection project.

FM2 Hospitality tent a great place to meet & greet

Barbara Armitage writes:
Just a reminder that the Farmer's Market on the Square (FM2) is open to ALL candidates who would like to opportunity to meet and talk with the local citizens. We have a very lovely "Hospitality Tent" complete with tables and chairs to make you comfortable.

If Matt Bevin would like to make use of FM2's Hospitality tent we will be happy to keep it up for as long as Mr. Bevin can stay in Columbia.

A heads up to candidates: Will you be at FM2?

We haven't been able to contact everyone - and to be frank have only heard from Matt Bevin - that he'll be here at around noon while the Farmers Market on the Square is underway - but here's a heads up to any candidate who will be here this morning: We want to know if you'll be here today at some point, so we can add your name to the list - and we'd like to know what you'll do to aid the market if you are elected.

The weather forecast is nearly perfect for Columbia's Farmer's Market on the Square (FM2, for short), with sunshine and a high of 63. This is the last Saturday before the election - and it's an awesome day for outdoor entertainment, meeting old acquaintances, street food, and entertainment for the entire family. Some will make it a day - some will be here at special times - to mingle, but everyone - especially candidates, should make at least one stop.

LWC Women's Tennis falls 5-2 in national semifinal

MOBILE, AL - The Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team's attempt to reach the program's first NAIA National Championship match fell short today with a 5-2 loss to second-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College at the Mobile Tennis Center.

The loss ends the Blue Raiders' season at 17-5 -- the first to an NAIA team this season.
