LWC Women's Tennis falls 5-2 in national semifinal

MOBILE, AL - The Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team's attempt to reach the program's first NAIA National Championship match fell short today with a 5-2 loss to second-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College at the Mobile Tennis Center.

The loss ends the Blue Raiders' season at 17-5 -- the first to an NAIA team this season.

The national semifinal match provided numerous momentum swings beginning with doubles play.

Lindsey Wilson grabbed the 1-0 overall lead with an impressive 8-3 win at the second-seeded doubles match.

Alejandra Galvis and Jessica King jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and showed complete control winning four of the first five games in the match. The Blue Raider pair extended its lead to 6-3 and eventually took the final two games in the win 8-3 over Ines Comstamanga and Victoria Svennson.

Georgia Gwinnett (17-4) scored the equalizer at the top-seeded doubles match -- which featured two of the top seven doubles pairs in the NAIA. Georgia Gwinnett's Valeria Podda and Helena Korompis were too much for Lindsey Wilson's seventh-ranked Sarah Bernos and Anna Gaprindashvili en route to an 8-4 win.

Podda and Korompis -- the second-ranked doubles team in the NAIA -- overcame an early deficit to win four straight games and five of six in the match in the win.

The critical third and final doubles point proved to be a rollercoaster ride.

After trailing 4-2 and then 6-3 in the match, Ana Helena Pinto and Alicia Rodriguez battled back to even the match at 6-6 with a pair of breaks. Paloma Cortina and Chiara Di Salvo ultimately turned the tide and won the final two games and the match 8-6 giving Georgia Gwinnett the 2-1 lead heading to singles.

The singles matches were even more competitive than the doubles filled with dramatic momentum swings. Podda -- the third-ranked singles player in the NAIA - gave the Grizzlies a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win over 14th-ranked Galvis in the top-seeded singles match.

While Georgia Gwinnett led the overall match, Lindsey Wilson showed signs of making a big comeback with leads in four of the five remaining matches. Bernos and King each won the opening set at two and four singles while Gaprindashvili and Pinto were leading in the first set at five and six singles.

]After winning 6-4 in the opening set, No. 19-ranked Bernos dropped the second set to 21st-ranked Judith van Fraaijenhoven 6-1. Bernos sprinted out to a 5-0 lead in the third and final set only to have van Fraaijenhoven turn the tables again with four straight game wins. Bernos ended the van Fraaijenhoven run by serving out the match in a 6-4 final-set win to move the Blue Raiders within 3-2 of the Grizzlies.

The Bernos and van Fraaijenhoven match was the first of four singles matches to go the distance.

Georgia Gwinnett's Chiara Di Salvo came back from a set down to beat 30th-ranked Jessica King 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth-seeded match to give the Grizzlies the 4-2 lead -- one point from the national finals.

No. 26-ranked Paloma Cortina gave the Grizzlies the decisive point with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over 24th-ranked Alicia Rodriguez at the third-seeded singles match. Cortina captured the final two games of the third set, including a break in the final game for the 5-2 overall win.

The remainder of the matches were halted with Gaprindashvili and Luma Schwab tied at a set apiece (6-3, 5-7) and Pinto leading Comstamanga 7-6 (4), 2-5.
