Sound Off letter: Child's artwork ruined Thinks parent of child who vandalized her child's work should compensate for damages Sound Off letter: "To the parents of the child that destroyed my sons painting good job teaching your son to write profanity on other peoples stuff. You need to teach your son that it is not right to touch other peoples stuff let along write profanity on it. It costed me around $150 or more for the paint and the brushes and the gas going back and forth to town to get the right paint. Not only should he be expelled from school but you all should repay me for the paint and gas and brushes that I bought my own self. There was no reason for him to touch my sons painting and to write profanity on it. Good job teaching your son writing profanity on other peoples stuff. Thank You a lot his painting is ruined."This letter was received and warranted greater expression, we thought, even though there was only a first name - no return address, no school system named, no other parents named. Our thought was that it might be of concern to other parents and staff and teachers of school districts in the area. The post is not an invitation or other anonymous letters. Unsigned letters or letters with requests for anonymity will only be posted in rare situations. - CM 2014-04-17 07:20:11 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Mother of child with food allergy concerned about menu choices Question raised is a complicated one, but one which may be the school system's most pressing one now: Helping our already innovative Food Service Department serve healthier meals. As we see it, it is not simply a Food Service issue. It is a community one. The fix may not be an easy one, but is an overriding one which, in the long run, could do more for improving academic and athletic performance, test scores, and most important , improving health and reducing overall costs. For the writer, there is an immediate problem and for her child, a drastic one, and she says, Exposing young children to foods that can cause severe health problems an/or death is crazy to me. She asks if there is a higher power to go to. There is. The Adair County School Board, which meets each third Thursday of each month. The next meeting is Thursday, April 17, 2017. - EW By Jamie Isabelle Personal commentary As a parent of a recent diagnosed child with a nut allergy, I find it upsetting to know that the school system exposes children to peanut butter on a regular basis. For instance, today (Wednesday, April 16, 2014) was either peanut butter and jam or grilled cheese.
