Remembering Uncle Willie, the Shoe Cobbler of Russell Springs

Heels and Half Soles:Uncle Willie Garner ran the only shoe shop in Russell Springs, KY, on Main Street for a while, then Dan Street. The writer remember many details of the shop, including his signs: 'He had two hand-lettered signs that never failed to amuse me. One, which hung above his work area, stated (verbatim) Cat's Paw hell taps, 25c. The other, which went on the door at twelve noon sharp every day, read (verbatim): Gone to Lunch. Bee back at 1 p.m.".

Comment on Monuments to Memories on KY 768

Brent Beard writes:
Hi Ed, you may have already received information on this picture and buildings but I'll tell you what I know. The house is known as the Mercer house for us folks here in the community, Katherine Mercer was last to live in it part time in the 1980's; it is currently owned by Harty Mercer who lives in Florida. The house was origionally built and owned by Rhodes Dohoney, and is the oldest house in Milltown. Frances Glasgow can give you more details and also could tell you more about the old brick building. My father said he remembers them grinding feed in that building. - Brent

Jarrett Miller: Alcohol sales not prevented by limiting where sold

By Jarrett Miller
Personal opinion of the writer

'When you consider the fact that their product can become addictive it should make people think twice about wanting to bring that type if business into town.' - Martha Berry
Regarding this argument, if you are really worried about having businesses selling an addictive and dangerous product, then you need to carry that thought to it's conclusion. By that logic, the county should shut down all tobacco sales in the county.

Now how many people think that is a good idea? I don't. Just like I don't think it is government's duty to regulate personal behavior. As Thomas Jefferson was known to say "If it neither picks my pocket or bloodies my nose, what concern of it is mine."

Restricting sales in the county only accomplishes one thing. Moving revenue from Adair County to other locations. You will not prevent sales by limiting the places they can be legally transacted.
